Some would argue that chicken fried steak is chicken fried steak no matter where you get it. Those people are obviously not from Texas. Us Texans know that there is a very fine art to making this dish: getting the breading just right so that it’s not too crisp, making sure the coating to meat ratio is even so as not to allow one element to overpower the other, and concocting a perfectly rich, creamy gravy that offsets the crunchiness of the crust. When all of these elements come together, it’s a song from heaven above. So without further ado, here are 10 restaurants that serve the best chicken fried steak in Texas

I love chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes and with green beans or corn and a good gravy.

Are there any good chicken fried steaks in other states.

I know it is a regional specialty.

I can’t remember which, but either Sam’s Club or BJs had a large freezer bag of chicken fried steak WITH a separate pouch of white gravy. It really wasn’t bad.

I tend to eat mine with a squeeze of lemon.

Not really sure of where I picked up the habit but there it is.

The gravy is for the mashed potatoes and corn. Mixed together.

Green beans on the side.

Here in Ohio I’ve had IHOPs Chicken Fried Steak with over easy eggs and hash browns a number of times and it was decent enough!

We’re fairly recent transplants to Arkansas and marvel at how the local DQ does land office business.

Seems there’s always a line at the drive-thru.

Hell, people even line up there FOR BREAKFAST

I visited Ranchmen’s in Ponder several times with friends when I lived in Dallas. I don’t know about these other places, but I can certify that the chicken fried steak in Ponder deserves to be on this list.

The best, I ever had was a black-owned restaurant on the east side of Nacogdoches, TX. It was the best I’ve ever eaten before snd after that restaurant. Went back to visit and heard it had closed. Sad.

German immigrants... back in the 1800s invented it as a copy of their schnitzel using the Texas ingredients they had at hand. Truly a Texas thing.

I got it at a sound good place once and the gravy was light brown, not whitish, and had pepper spicing.

It was great.
