A former American Navy SEAL was killed this week during Russia’s assault on eastern Ukraine while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces, a Navy official tells TIME.
Daniel Swift, a Navy Special Warfare Operator First Class who had gone AWOL, died Jan. 18 after suffering injuries with a unit under attack by Russia, the official said.

Yeh, whole lots of them and no names is convenient because it cannot be proved. I doubt there is a slew of AWOL Seals in reality.
Too bad there isn’t a AVG with A10’s. There would be pilots lining up to light up some Ruskie armor.

“AWOL” and “former” do not belong together. It’s one or the other.
So there are American soldiers, “advisors”, helping out the Ukes, what could possibly go wrong? I mean the Ruskies won’t go nuclear and I assume they are there of their own free will in order to, as the kids say, “git some”. Wasn’t this a big deal early in the “war”, people lining up to rush in and play mercenary?
When passed, everything is "former." But, an AWOL Seal? That's practically an oxymoron.

Yeah, that was my first though too.
Nice of the government to give a cover story of the guy dying a criminal, a deserter. I feel sorry if the guy left behind a family that will have to live with that story.
