It seems that Walmart is having big financial problems. I wonder how much is directly related to their forcing self-checking in many of their stores.
The local superstore went self-check with 1 manned check-out a few years ago. I reduced my shopping their to only once or twice a year. When the self-check started, the 1 manned check-out had a line waiting to get checked out. Most of them were complaining about Walmart having only 1 manned check-out and trying to force self-checkout.
The Meijers stores near me actually just expanded their self-checkout options.
The Market Basket in New England is doing a busting business and they have great people in the store. SERVICE!

Last Saturday I rode to Walmart with my GF. While there I picked up about a 1/2 basket of groceries that included a 6-pack of beer. Self-checkout halted at the beer at which point an employee showed up to verify my ID.
I just renewed my licensed....had the old one with me, but left the paper receipt in my truck at home. She told me I’d have to get it. Nope, not happening. Showed her my still valid LTC....nope can’t accept that, only a driver’s license.
My girlfriend offered to buy it. Nope....she could be buying that for me, and I obviously don’t look 62 years old. Right.
So I tell her to cancel it. That’s when we discover that she’s not competent enough to do that.
So, as she wandered off in search of help, we both left half full baskets in front of the scanners and exited the store. Wonder what that cost them?

I never go to cashier-run checkout and never will. In fact, on the rare occasions there’s a line in the self-checkout area I simply walk out of the store and shop some other time. Have you ever been in a hurry and had to stand behind some old geezer for five minutes while he checks every pocket of his clothing for a few pennies because his bill is say $5.03? GIVES ME CHEST PAINS!!
I wonder if the Amazon grocery stores are having the same problem, since they have no cashiers at all.
For me, I do the order online, pull up into a parking spot, let Kroger know which spot, and they bring the groceries to my vehicle. No waiting in line, convenient pickup times, and no rude/”People of WalMart/Kroger/Target” experiences.

frank ballenger - I’m a 53 year old man with 4 kids, and never worried about wearing pink. In fact, I have a couple of pink polo shirts in my closet right now. It’s just a color. Doesn’t mean squat.
I like self checkout if I have just a few items. Otherwise self checkout sucks.
