Keto-like diet may be linked to higher risk of heart disease, cardiac events (<25% of calories from carbs, double the cardiac events)
Medical Xpress / American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session / ^ | March 6, 2023 | Iulia Iatan, MD, Ph.D et al

Posted on 03/07/2023 10:07:44 AM PST by ConservativeMind

A new study suggests that a "keto-like" diet may be associated with higher blood levels of "bad" cholesterol and a twofold heightened risk of cardiovascular events such as chest pain (angina), blocked arteries requiring stenting, heart attacks and strokes.

Proponents of a ketogenic diet suggest limiting carbohydrates to 10% of total daily calories, protein to 20% to 30% and obtaining 60% to 80% of daily calories from fat.

Some previous studies have shown that an LCHF diet can lead to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol in some people.

Iatan and her colleagues defined an LCHF diet as consisting of no more than 25% of total daily energy or calories from carbohydrates and more than 45% of total daily calories from fat. They dubbed this an LCHF diet and "keto-like."

The research team analyzed data from the UK Biobank.

Compared with participants on a standard diet, those on an LCHF diet had significantly higher levels of both LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (apoB), the protein component that sits on LDL and other atherogenic lipoprotein particles. After an average of 11.8 years of follow-up, people on an LCHF diet had more than two-times higher risk of having several major cardiovascular events, such as blockages in the arteries that needed to be opened with stenting procedures, heart attack, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. In all, 9.8% of participants on an LCHF diet experienced a new cardiac event, compared with 4.3% of those on a standard diet, a doubling of risk for those on an LCHF diet.

"On average, cholesterol levels tend to rise on this diet, but some people's cholesterol concentrations can stay the same or go down, depending on several underlying factors," Iatan said. "There are inter-individual differences in how people respond to this dietary pattern that we don't fully understand yet."

This was an association study, but I can say my last blood test showed I had bad apoB and LDL levels.

Since then, I’ve cut back on saturated fat and animal fat, in favor of olive oil as a main source of fat.

We’ll see what my blood says, next.

Oh, and I have been on a low-carb approach, with under 60-70 net carbs, a day.

I’m skeptical about this one - who paid for this study? The sugar industry?

60 to 70 still seems high for keto to really kick in. Especially when using ‘net’ in the lower carb counts. I just don’t trust those numbers on myself. GL.

I call low carb diets, the “get weak and crappy inside in all the places you can’t see” diet.

I have very simple macro goals, carbs around 50%, fats 30%, and protein 20%, or thereabouts. Sometimes more protein after heavier lifting in the gym. Any lower in the carbs and my endurance drops and I can’t push out as many reps with heavy weight.

I do keep sugars fairly low though, but I don’t go overboard with that either. A little sugar seems to improve my cardio sessions.

Please keep in mind that this study was “provided by” the American College of Cardiology, which is funded in part by donations from processed “food” manufacturers like Coca-Cola.

60-70 is not Keto.

It is “Low carb.”

My personal experience is exactly the opposite. My cholesterol and other markers like HDLs and LDLs are normally off the scale in the wrong direction. When I do keto dieting all these numbers come in the green; time after time after time. Plus, I lose some tonnage.

So, I have the same question as others: who financed this study?

Don’t know, from personal experience it doesn’t LIKE the GI tract. It tastes wierd too, different textures. A loaf of the bread is over $6.00.

Here is the latest on the Baby Formula, what they recalled was Plant Based made in Pureto Rico, been in the warhouses since Aug-Sept 2022. Yet the shortages are still a very big issue.

As I said in my original post, I changed my fat choices and I have yet to get another set of tests.

I do have days that my carbs are under 30, but very rarely goin above 70 grams.

As soon as I saw this I said to myself, “Well, JudyinCanada, it appears they have been trying to find something that’s been popular these past couple of years and make some connection between that and cardiac deaths. This way the sudden deaths of healthy younger people can be blamed on this and not the jab!”

Call me jaded, but it sounds like something they’d do.
