Yes, I saw all three play the role: Hershel Bernardi, Zero Mostel and Chaim Topol. Bernardi’s character had the most human sensitivity and tragic depth. He didn’t scream everything like a Cossack or like a clown. That was my mother’s opinions on the character as played by the three and I agree with her :)
