Study shows vitamin D may have key role in fighting off COVID-19 pneumonia (Increases barrier function 25% - 40%)

Clinical data increasingly has shown that patients with low vitamin D levels have a greater chance of COVID-19 infection—and severe disease and death. Now, research points to an explanation for the link and provides evidence that higher vitamin D intake can help fight off the disease.

The study indicates the vitamin strengthens the lung lining and possibly also reducing fluid leakage into the airways, which causes pneumonia.

"Your body is mostly sacs and tubes," said James Mullin, Ph.D. "If their linings are in good shape, you're in good shape. If they're leaking and fail to provide a proper barrier, it's a problem. When you have a respiratory infection, that means the barrier in your lungs is leaking."

The study examined cell cultures from human lung linings and examined them using two independent metrics. It found that vitamin D increased barrier function by 40% and 25%, respectively. The study builds on a body of research by Mullin's team indicating vitamin A, zinc and other micronutrients play a similar role to vitamin D.

Published literature has indicated that patients with vitamin D deficiency were five times more likely to become infected by COVID-19. Data supporting supplemental doses for those with vitamin D levels in the normal range are less clear, the authors said.

"The benefits, however, are so clear and the risks so minimal that we believe physicians should be recommending supplemental vitamin D right away," Mullin said. "Cytokine storms, where the body's immune response kicks into overdrive and can result in severe disease and death in COVID, compromise the body's airway barrier function. We already know from past studies vitamin D blunts cytokine storms in cases of flu. In cases of COVID-19, vitamin D therapy may allow time for a patient's own immune defenses to kick in before it's too late."

Youd have to take several hundred thousand IUs for weeks to develop toxicity. People get nowhere near that. Most people have the opposite problem - being deficient - which is more damaging. Vitamin D is used in hundreds of body processes. Its called a master hormome.

This is really interesting to me: “vitamin D strengthens the lung lining and possibly also reducing fluid leakage into the airways”

I used to have a chronic feeling of fluid in my lungs and frequent coughing to expel it. Since starting the Vit D (5000 IU), Vit C, NAC, Zinc and Quercetin regimen in April 2020, that problem has gone away. I also have not had a single respiratory infection since then, either. Historically, I’ve had one or two colds per year with most turning into a lingering 10-12 week bronchitis bout.

I just had my Vit D level checked and it was at 60.

Clif Hi...a blogger from the NW....says that if your vit D level is at 50 or higher you can’t get a virus....he’s not a doctor but he does follow health trends and I believe him....we haven’t been sick in this household.

Vitamin D has so many benefits. I take it daily. I feel better after doing so. You can test your levels.

Back when Covid got started I saw some doctor on youtube talking about how to stay healthy. He for years had been saying the same thing, and that it would help protect against Covid. Something like “There are four things essential to staying well, especially during Covid.

1) Vitamin D
2) Vitamin D
3) Vitamin D
4) (I can’t remember - water??)

Get the hell out into the sunshine seriously every day. And dump the pills. You are just pissing it away using supplements. Your skin is the biggest absorber of Vitamin D and there’s a reason for that.

I tend to agree....just walking around in sunshine for 30 minutes would give you enough. Winter months, yeah, I might add D-vitamin every other day because of the lack of sunshine or weather. Note, you can get vitamin D from cod liver oil, tuna, sardines and salmon as well.

I don't think that is true. Just before my wife and I got COVID, our blood tests showed that my Vit D level was 65 and my wife's level was 85.

Even before I caught COVID, I was taking enough vitamin pills to make dog choke (quercetin, zinc, D, multi tablet, etc...). Both of us were in our 60s. Neither of us got really sick, but we did come down with the classic COVID symptoms and the home test popped positive.

I wish we’d stop it with the Covid bs. The flu was the beginning of the end. So many germophobic suckers.

Early on, the Israeli’s reported that everyone who was hospitalized with Covid was Vitamin D deficient.

My PCP put me on Vitamin D supplements, but I’m tanned from living in Florida.

One jab (and no boosters) in 2022, and no COVID.

First ever Vitamin D level check I had was early on during the scamdemic.

I didn’t ask for it.

My doc just ordered it.

Never got an explanation for why, all of a sudden, it was needed.

It would be interesting to see if the orders for Vitamin D level tests spiked during the coof.

And when.

Mine was fine, BTW.

Mine was always terrible for a long time because:
A. I live in the north, and...
B. Worked midnights for 23 years.

I started supplementing during covid and have had no problems.
