Woman Sues Parents for Using Her College Fund To Pay for Brother’s Wedding

Paying for college without taking on a lot of debt is no easy task. Annual tuition and fees at public four-year colleges for 2021-2022 were $10,740 for state residents to about $27,500 for out-of-state residents, according to College Board data.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a college fund established for you by a well-to-do relative, graduating debt-free is possible. That is unless your parents decide to use your tuition money for something else.

The Backstory That’s what happened to one Reddit user who went to the bank to get her tuition money, only to discover the account had been plundered. The account had been funded by a great-aunt of the original poster (OP), who wanted all of her female relatives to get a college education.

“My great-aunt set up savings accounts for all of her female relatives. She funded the education of as many of her nieces and grandnieces as she could. When she passed away, she left money for every girl relative she could.”

When confronting her parents about the missing money, they were initially cagy about how it had been spent, saying only they needed it. The original poster (OP) later discovered that her college fund was used to pay for her brother’s wedding.

Her Parents’ Response “My parents managed to access the accounts that were set up for my sister and I. They used it to pay for my brother’s wedding. My sister didn’t care because she got married two years out of high school and had no intention of going to college. When I graduated, I went to the bank to get money for school, and it was almost all gone.”

The OP was understandably upset. She was forced to take out student loans to pay for school.

The Lawsuit and the Aftermath She filed a lawsuit against her parents to recover the money her great-aunt left to pay for her education. That did not sit well with her family.

“My entire family is against me. They all think I am a complete a****** for airing private family business in public. And that I am putting money ahead of family.”

The OP further mentions feeling somewhat ashamed. She also expressed that she doesn’t want to bear the burden of taking on debt she should not have, thanks to her great-aunt’s generosity.

Why are people writing articles about things they not only have not fact checked but that they have no way to fact check?

Isn’t it usually the bride’s family that pays for the wedding? Something fishy about this story, unless it happened outside the US.

But will they qualify for wedding loan forgiveness?

Well, if the fact description is true, isn’t the bride’s family the one who pays for the wedding (except booze)? My wife’s family was of modest means (as was I), so we had a small reception in the church basement. Suited me fine.

How much does a wedding cost these days? If you keep it simple, you can get by for a few thousand dollars.

If this happened as described, the parents were wrong to gain access to that account and again wrong to drain it away.
These parents may be somewhat like mine were, in that if you have several children, the goals and ambitions of the boy child will automatically take priority over goals and ambitions of the girls. It’s an old fashioned way of thinking, assuming that the girl shouldn’t need to worry about her future, all she need do is to ‘find the right man to marry’.

Some women who wound up on the short end of the agreement, never do completely let go of the underlying resentment toward their parents and their brother for not seeming to give a darn about what would be best for their daughter’s future. Many families still operate that way.

Maybe her brother is a tranny. Everyone knows that trumps everything.

Sounds like great-aunt Karen was a total sexist man-hater.

My point is that we have no way of knowing if the story is true or not and neither does the author and I would think that something approaching journalism ethics would have prevented him (or her) from writing it.

But then I am a idealist. Or a cynic.

But to your point it depends on the country and the culture. For example if her family is mohammedan (poor girl who I am not sure is real) then the grooms family pays.

Chinese culture, groom family pays. Korea, bride family pays. Thailand groom pays and may fork over a dower although that is going away.

European culture it is usually the bride's family that pays.

It is usually the daughters who care for the aged parents. Undermining both daughters prospects seems like an odd choice. Maybe the son is the one who is always there for the parents in this instance, and he is the one they are staking their future care on. That would seem like the only need-based defense. Maybe he married a very respected healthcare practitioner!

Most college accounts allow a parent to pay the tax and use it as they please. They were obviously on the account. It’s plausible that the girl became a royal PITA and her parents decided what was best for the family.

Take caution when taking a claim from a college age girl as the only side of the story.

Maybe the female is the horrible people. And it seems like nobody in her family has come to her defense.... IF any of this is even true.

Not in an Asian culture. The groom pays. I would be dollars to doughnut holes the parents are Chinese.
