Genesis explains it all. If folks don’t get Genesis they will have a difficult time getting the rest.

The Sumerians themselves didn't regard themselves as native to Mesopotamia, they said they'd arrived by sea. So say they. The oldest writing (that can be read) was their invention, so with them, history begins.

I'll go with the facts on the ground, including the ones under the water.
