An Islamic extremist has been given 10 life sentences and another 260 years in prison for killing eight people with a truck on a bike path in Manhattan and severely injuring 18 others.
Sayfullo Saipov remained remorseless Wednesday and said the tears of victims and family members in the courtroom were small compared to the blood and tears that those in the Islamic faith have suffered.
'I was here in the court during the three-month trial, and I saw and I heard the victims, families and friends,' he said through an interpreter before his sentencing. 'The court would be filled up with the tears and blood of the Muslim population.'
District Judge Vernon S. Broderick cited Saipov's unrepentant nature when he handed down his sentence for the October 31, 2017 attack in which the ISIS-inspired terrorist used a Home Depot truck to mow down victims on Manhattan's West Side.
'The conduct in this case is among the worst if not the worst I´ve ever seen,' he said.
A jury in March had rejected the death penalty for the Uzbekistan citizen and onetime New Jersey resident.
The relatives of eight people killed in the Halloween terror attack spoke sometimes through tears during the sentencing, describing their lingering pain and sometimes directly addressing the man convicted in the deaths.
Saipov, 35, kept his head drooped and eyes lowered, listening to a translation of the proceedings through earphones.
Frank Decadt, father of victim Ann-Laure Decadt, told Saipov that he hoped that 'one day you will understand the extent of horror you have inflicted on so many people.'
Marion Van Reeth, who lost her legs in the attack, sat before Saipov in her wheelchair, telling him: 'I will never be able to walk like you can.'

What kind of justice is it that requires the parents and loved ones of the victims to be paying, perhaps for decades, to provide all the creature comforts, health benefits, etc for the murderer of their friends and relatives. Unfortunately, the sentences being consecutive rather than concurrent, and the average “life” sentence being 7 years, he can’t expect early parole for 84 years. So he likely won’t be available for a greeting by those truly annoyed by his actions.
They need to bring back public hangings. Justice is never truly served when you never see it happen.

Murdered 8. Maimed 18. No remorse. Belittles victims, and the families and friends of victims. And a jury cannot find it in them to mete out the death penalty?
Murdering babies is a right. But executing the worst kinds of criminals as a deterrent to future murders is just too hard.
Our country is beyond hope. Has to fall. Has to end.
