Portland, OR was one of the leading voices in the “Defund the Police” movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Politicians gave into the demands of like-minded rioters and activists and began cutting the budget of the city’s Bureau of Police.
On its face, this should have been seen as a bad decision since the very people making the demands were rioting and damaging private and public property. So, at a time when a greater police presence was needed, city government cut back on police.
The politicians gave into the demands of criminals and expected them to… what? Go home? Play nice?
Defunding the police has just emboldened the criminals wherever it was tried, endangering lives and driving away people and business.
Now, with the damage done and its tax base shrinking, Portland has realized it needs police. Unfortunately, now, it is more burdensome to fund them and harder to attract officers to a city where they know the government doesn’t want them. Gee, if only they had maintained their police force and supported them when they had the chance, they might not find themselves in the predicament they do.

Portland was on a downward slide prior to the BLM/ANTIFA crap. This just hastened the race to the bottom.
The sad part of all this is Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco were once beautiful cities. Now, they’re hotbeds for criminals, BLM-ANTIFA terrorists and Fentanyl zombies.

Why would any cop want to join the Portland police department. They get no support by the city and would always be wondering if they would be laid off.
Even death is an insufficient lesson for liberals. They are totally immune to cause and effect.

I was in Portland for a trade show and stayed downtown. This was before the Saint Floyd mostly peaceful protests. It was disgusting. Cops just walked up and down the river park while junkies were shooting up and causing all kinds of trouble. Enjoy the suck Portland.
Can you imagine the quality of police officers they are going to have applying for such positions? What true law-abiding and Constitution-supporting LEO is going to apply to work in Portland? Any arrest, much less a death of a person being taken into custody, and they will immediately be thrown beneath the bus by the city leaders.

In related news, a 12th Oregon county is making a move to become part of Idaho, leaving only the Portland-Eugene corridor intact.
They need to contract with New Orleans for the supply of police officers. I think they might be crosstrained as hairdressers, because they know how to apply a hickory shampoo when they need to.
I wonder how realistic the greater Idaho movement is
