High blood pressure is the most deadly risk factor for women worldwide
Medical Xpress / European Society of Cardiology ^ | May 17, 2023 | Professor Angela Maas et al

Posted on 05/19/2023 6:03:58 AM PDT by ConservativeMind

All women should know their blood pressure to prevent heart disease and stroke, urged cardiologists on World Hypertension Day.

"Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women," said Professor Angela Maas. "The risk for cardiovascular disease increases at a lower blood pressure level in women compared to men."

"One of the most important consequences of hypertension in women is a type of heart failure in which the heart muscle is stiff," she continued. "There are few treatments for that condition, so if you want to avoid symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and fluid retention when you are over 70, you have to start treating high blood pressure in middle age."

Around one in three women have hypertension globally. Raised blood pressure has been named the most important risk factor for death in women. "Despite its importance, we know that hypertension is more often underestimated and not, or insufficiently, treated in women compared to men," said Professor Maas. "One reason may be that below the age of 50, hypertension is more prevalent in men. This reverses in the years after menopause so that after the age of 65, hypertension is more common in women than men."

"When we treat hypertension, many symptoms erroneously attributed to menopause disappear," said Professor Maas. "Night sweats can be caused by high blood pressure, for example, so women with menopausal symptoms should have their blood pressure checked and treated if needed."

Hypertension in midlife is more harmful in women than in similarly aged men, and is a stronger risk factor for myocardial infarction, cognitive decline and dementia. The probability of stroke increases at a lower blood pressure level in women than in men, while high blood pressure raises the risk for heart failure in women by three-fold, compared to two-fold in men.

Ladies, be careful and reduce your blood pressure to a normal level. This can be done with diet and exercise, or through drugs. Supplements can help, too.

I did not know this was considered the highest risk factor for death, in women.

And the reason for high blood pressure is mostly obesity.

In my family, it’s the women who give other people high blood pressure.

In fat people maybe. I know plenty of people that are thin and have high blood pressure. Losing weight will not help them.

The average us woman is 164 lbs and 5’4” tall. So the average us woman is overweight, ergo high blood pressure, among other things...

I’ve also started Super Beets. Don’t know if it helps, but it can’t hurt.

If men would quit p*ssing us off and getting us all riled up, that would go a long way, too! ;)

I have slightly elevated BP, as does everyone in my genetic family. I take a diuretic, but that’s all that’s required - and all that ever will be because I DO do the things suggested to keep it under control. :)

Everyone can reduce their blood pressure by losing fat weight.

Every 2.2 pounds lost will reduce systolic by one mm Hg (one point). 20 pounds of fat loss gets you a permanent reduction of 9 mm Hg. Diastolic comes down, too, perhaps around 7 mm Hg.

This should work for everyone.

I’m 5” 5” and weigh 163...I also lift heavy in the gym 4 days a week. The scale isn’t always the best indicator of obesity.

Gotta stay strong to pack those elk out during hunting season :)

”This reverses in the years after menopause so that after the age of 65, hypertension is more common in women than men.”

This indicates that the underlying issue could be hormone deficiency or imbalance. Restoring healthy hormone levels (with “bioidentical hormones”) might repair hypertension along with other age-related defects.

Olive leaf extract is effective for high blood pressure. It is a highly concentrated form of the polyphenols from olive oil but without the fat.
