The Senate dealt a bipartisan blow to President Joe Biden’s student loan debt cancellation plan on Thursday, voting to support a resolution that blocks it from becoming law and also restarts monthly loan payments that have been paused since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic – the most significant rejection to date of the White House signature higher education policy.
House Republicans adopted the resolution last month, but Biden is set to veto it. The White House warned in a statement of administrative policy that he would veto the measure if it makes it to his desk, saying it would "weaken America's middle class" and amount to “an unprecedented attempt to undercut our historic economic recovery.”
Notably, the bill hasn’t garnered enough support in either chamber to reach the two-thirds majority required to override a presidential veto.
In the Senate, the resolution was adopted 52-46, clearing the simple majority threshold with the help of two Democrats, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, as well as independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.
“Today I voted to repeal the Biden Administration’s student loan cancellation proposal because we simply cannot afford to add another $400 billion to the national debt,” Manchin said in a statement. “There are already more than 50 existing student loan repayment and forgiveness programs aimed at attracting individuals to vital service jobs, such as teachers, health care workers and public servants. This Biden proposal undermines these programs and forces hard-working taxpayers who already paid off their loans or did not go to college to shoulder the cost.”
“Instead, we should be focusing on bipartisan student debt reforms that reduce the cost of higher education and help all Americans,” he said.

I don’t get it. Why is Congress fooling around with Biden’s giveaway if he Constitutionally doesn’t have the authority to do what he did? It seems to me it’s a huge appropriation issue not within the Executive Branch.
WTF is congress doing?? There is no law in place to repeal.
It’s all theater.
Go for it, Joe. You will not face the consequences of your act, either signing this atrocity into law, or vetoing it, either way leads to disaster.
There is no way out for the American citizens, now.
Very real possibility of a broad balkanization of that territory once known as the “United States of America”.
It’s called optics... look, we did something. Why is the border open? Border policy isn’t broken, failing to follow existing laws is what’s broken.
Government chooses what it wants to do rather than follow the Constitution which it is sworn to protect. They lie to the American people daily and the American people keep electing idiots.
Eggs-acktly!
Eggs-acktly!
(with even more detail)
“WTF is congress doing?? There is no law in place to repeal.” There is no law however, there is this “presidential edict” issued by an idiot who fancies himself a king. The Senate vote highlights the issue. From there it goes to the USSC where it will (should) be struck down.
Message to court.
Low IQ deadbeat Xiden zombies need to pay back their loans. Period.
Why aren't the heads of universities called to testify before congress regarding the astronomical tuitions, especially when many of these colleges have multi-billion dollar endowment funds? Why should the taxpayers be placed on the hook for student loans? The colleges are charging way more for a product that obviously is not worth the price if the students who take these loans are unable to get jobs that allow them to pay back the loans.
If you are 6 figures in debt for a degree in humanities with a minor in "gender studies" , you are setting yourself up for some serious financial pain. If there is no demand in the marketplace for your particular field of study, how do you expect to pay back your loan? Good vibes are not going to do it.
IF CONGRESS SAYS YOU CAN’T SPEND MONEY FOR THAT. HOW CAN THE PRESIDENT BY VETO SAY I WILL SPEND THE MONEY?
We’re no longer a republic.
Until that changes Deep State can do whatever it thinks it can get away with.
And that’s a lot.
