Biden VETOES Republican bill blocking his $400 billion student loan forgiveness plan: President vows to keep 'helping hardworking folks' - and leaves fate of relief program in hands of Supreme Court

resident Joe Biden on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have overturned his student debt relief plan, leaving program's fate in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Both the House and Senate approved the legislation that would block the president's program, which promises to cancel up to $20,000 of debt for millions of borrowers but has been held up by courts.

'I'm not gonna back down in my efforts to help pretend to manage and working and middle class families. That's why I'm going to veto this bill,' Biden said in a video posted to the White House social media accounts explaining his decision.

'I won’t back down on helping hardworking folks,' he noted.

The video ends with the president, sitting at his desk in the Oval Office, signing the veto.

'Over the last two years, I've been working to make college more affordable for all students. And my Department of Education has proposed the most generous repayment program ever was you're going to cut undergraduate loan payments in half and it makes it really clear. I'm never going to apologize for helping working and middle class Americans. As they recover from this pandemic. Never,' he said.

Biden blasted Republicans in his statement but some moderate Democratic senators voted with the GOP to block the program: Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana voted for the bill, as did Independent Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema.

The Supreme Court still needs to determine whether the student loan forgiveness program can take effect. The justices are expected to issue a ruling in late June or early July.

A two-thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate would be required to overturn Biden's veto and it is unlikely opponents to the program can reach that threshold.

Why is there a bill to stop the idiot spending? Last I checked congress controls the spending. Just tell him no.

All this bullshit is to blur the separation of powers. A bill to stop a President spending, that he can veto is absurd.

I hate our government pigs and the media pigs that enable them.

Which is one of the things McCarthy caved on in the debt limit deal.

Yeah, the sonofabitch is really helping with $4-$5 gas, food prices and inflation off the charts. What a ghastly phony.

Hey, Joe; How about protecting the hardworking folks who are going to have to eventually pay for the deadbeats who voluntarily accepted the loans and now refuse to meet the terms of the contract?

Biden needs to descend to his infernal reward tonight. I am not advocating violence. I just want the guy to croak over in his sleep.

When any politician says “folks,” it’s a pretty good bet that a lie is in progress. Obama sounds the goofiest saying it, but Brandon is not far behind.

I'm not gonna back down in my efforts to help pretend to manage and working and middle class families.

Such deceit.

What this middle class family wants is a stable economy, secure borders, trust in govt agencies, freedom from crime, and a free market economy.

We would never accept an unearned handout. Never.

My family, including my college educated "kids", believe in earning our way. If we borrow, we repay.

I had a relatively smallish debt following grad school. Repaying it was my highest priority. And, there's a feeling of accomplishment that comes with repaying loans.

Fast forward to present, I'm a debt-free homeowner in retirement. A product of lessons from NEVER accepting an unearned handout.

"President vows to keep 'helping hardworking folks'"

I think he uses the words "helping" and "robbing" interchangeably.

Biden sucks. And this bill was good to block that spending. But they never seem to cut off funding for Ukraine, the FBI, the CIA, the new 80,000 IRS agents, etc.

The “hardworking folks” are the ones footing the bill - how is that helping us? It also causes more inflation - how does that help us?
