Ooook, now you peaked my interest. Tell me more. Can you refer some cities to look at, maybe a realtor who deals in rentals? Like I said, wherever God wants me, that’s where I’ll go.

I’ve heard the weather in Wyoming can be REALLY brutal during the winter months, which is about 6-7 months out of the year. Someone correct me if I’m in error.

One question that might be important is whether SD taxes retirement income...

Do those islands have a Home Depot to be able to easily get building supplies?

This is small town territory as opposed to filthy big cities. In other words what’s left of Americana. I’d start at Decorah. Big Norwegian community. Colleges and medical. Going east toward Mississipi river not much else but rural/farm communities. Maybe 25-30 miles to river. Waukon toward river and smaller. Know nothing about real estate/land for sale but check landflip.com or whitetailproprties.com.

Anywhere in upper midwest can have brutal winters especially when you get to the great plains where there is nothing between you and the north pole.

I know there is no state income or inheritance tax. Retirement income, I dunno.

The Rushmore Region is known as the "Banana Belt," because on many winter days the Black Hills bask in sun and warmth. Location and geology combine to protect the region from many of the winter weather systems originating in Canada and the Northwest.

They do have a good property tax. No state income tax doesn’t mean less tax.

I’m just wanting to rent, so hopefully property tax won’t be an issue, at least at first. If I buy later, possibly.

I’ve never been to Iowa, but in everything I’ve read up on about it - I’m looking at it closely as I creep closer to retirement age.
