A handwritten document found stuffed in Aretha Franklin’s couch cushions is at the crux of a dispute over her multi-million dollar estate — with a Michigan jury seated Monday in the case tasked with deciding whether it’s a valid will.
The panel was chosen to oversee the Oakland County Probate trial between the Queen of Soul’s sons Kecalf and Edward Franklin — who believe the 2014 document is valid — and their brother, Ted White II, aka Teddy Richards, who wants a handwritten from 2010 to be honored instead.
Both documents were found in the “Respect” singer’s suburban Detroit home in 2019 — with the earlier one discovered in a closet and the later one unearthed from the sofa.

I honestly think only wills turned into the county by a lawyer should count. If I were on this jury I couldn’t vote for some random will found after she died. She’s rich enough to do the will properly especially one from 2014.
“I wonder who planted the note?”

PS - also include 4 fried chickens and a coke...oh and some toasted white bread with that estate
Miss Franklin was not the best at managing her finances.
About 10 years before her death, she was close to bankruptcy. Poor money management and tons of hangers on.
So not having a proper will is not a surprise.
Wow. The most I ever find in my couch cushion is maybe a quarter or two. Never 80 million dollars.
Don’t you come blaspheming in here!
I didn’t realize that. I guess we’ll find out what the jury has to say sometime in the future.
We're talking dates and signatures. Also we don't know if it says this makes earlier wills invalid...which is sorta implied because of the judge saying concern is ONLY about the later will.
Our former President's dictum has led my life's actions in this area: I look in hope, and then find change.
I suppose we are all different but if one is worth $80 million one should have a valid will on file with your lawyer so that your estate is disposed of as you wish. Competing scraps of paper isn’t showing any respect to the memory and legacy of the former Queen of Soul.

“I honestly think only wills turned into the county by a lawyer should count.”
__________
The Democrats would love that kind of stance. Better the state get the estate than the family, eh.
If she bothered to write down her wishes, honor them as possible. If she wanted the state to have her estate, she could have written that but didn’t.
If the two documents are authentic, the latest date should apply.
80 large? God bless her. From humble beginnings in a gospel choir to 80 mil. Mongo impressed.
Aretha was great in the Blues Brothers.

Aretha Franklin and Howard Hughes - two siblings by a different mother!
And here's the money quote from the Howard Hughes article:
Well, in 2010, more than 34 years after Howard Hughes died, it appears that having the sole assets being real estate involved in bankruptcy was enough for the lawyers and taxing agencies to let go of the estate.
Please get a notarized (at least in Texas) piece of paper with instructions to leave all of your assets to a charity ...
Kecalf?
The judge has already said only the second will is to be considered.
“ About 10 years before her death, she was close to bankruptcy.”
So she went to $80M in ten years?
