Over the past seven months, 14 convicted killers have met their maker as four states look to ramp up their execution programs - despite allegations America's death row systems are rife with problems.
On Thursday morning, Oklahoma executed Jemaine Cannon, 51, by lethal injection for stabbing a woman to death with a butcher's knife in 1995. And before Friday at 6am, Alabama is set to execute James Barber for the 2001 murder of an elderly woman who he beat to death with his bare fists and a claw hammer.
In January, transgender murderer Amber McLaughlin, 49, was the first to be executed on January 3, for the 2003 slaying of her ex-girlfriend Beverly Guenther. She became the transgender death row inmate to be put to death in US history.
Two further executions have been carried out in Missouri since, with the ten other state-sponsored deaths occurring in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida.
But the fleet of executions come amid allegations some states have been illegally sourcing lethal injection drugs on the black market.
And once the lethal cocktail is obtained, several inmates have endured hours of agonizing attempts to insert IV lines, to the point where some were abandoned.
On January 3, 49-year-old Amber McLaughlin made history as the first transgender criminal to be put to death in the United States.
At the time she raped and murdered her girlfriend Beverly Guenther in 2003, Amber was living by her legal name Scott. After stalking and killing Guenther, McLaughlin then dumped her body near the Mississippi River.
She was also a registered sex offender following a 1992 conviction for sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl.
Her 2006 trial captured headlines after a jury failed to find a unanimous decision on the death penalty...

Now thats a historic trannie first that should be taught to the children ...
I didn’t see J. Biden, H. Biden, C. Schumer, H. Jefferies, C.Wray, etc... Guess they were left off accidentally.
And yet, every day, thousands of surgery patients get IV's inserted with no problems...

I remember a time in America when such people would have been put in state mental hospitals BEFORE they hurt themselves or others. Now they’re celebrated and asked to speak to children about how wonderful their lives can be as an insane person.

MA convicted killer Robert “Michelle”
Kosilek has life in prison for murder
of his wife (1990) as Mass. has no death
penalty (demands sex change surgery)
Wiki:May 2006, Kosilek sued the DOC, arguing that its refusal to provide sex reassignment surgery constituted “cruel and unusual punishment” under the Eighth Amendment.
On September 4, 2012, U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled that the MDOC had violated Kosilek’s constitutional rights by denying sex reassignment surgery,
Here on the North Shore of Boston
there was Dr Richard Sharpe, a
successful dermatologist who began
to cross dress and murdered his wife.
Sharpe hung himself in prison in
2009. Self administered death penalty.
A musician in the area said his ex wife
worked for Sharpe but left the
practice before the murder.
Alan Estes:
“Everybody was watching him go down hill,” he said. “He was a successful businessman and doctor and he was always walking a fine line of lunacy. People saw him losing more and more touch with reality as time went on.”-Gloucester Daily Timed
Not near enough!
They need to wire up the high school bleachers to make an impact.
The real criminal part is that many murderers are on death row longer than the complete lives of the victims.
That is ridiculous.
emphasis, mine…
This guy was executed in February yet the author says “allegedly” because the killer said he didn't do it. SMH
SPJNK.
A few years back I read an article on the subject of inserting IV lines for execution. It seems these folks have collapsed veins from drug use, making it quite difficult to get the needle in.
The problem I see with this is if they were in prison for 10 to 20 years awaiting appeals, they should not have collapsed veins because they should not be getting drugs.
One person spent hours of agonizing torture where they tried every vein they could find. The governor then granted him life in prison instead of execution. Before he could get the news he died of a heart attack while they were still poking him.
Is it just me or does nearly 30 years on death row seem like justice delayed?
