I learned of this tradition when I was in grad school. It goes much deeper than this clown is explaining.
The true translation of the greeting was something along the lines of, “I did not exist until you saw me.”
The act of seeing and acknowledging someone gives them meaning and a place in the world. Try explaining to a six year old the concepts of “existence” and meaning in the world.
I think existential philosophy might be a bit too much for first graders.
Do they think they are in the movie Avatar?

I live in MA. This is the next town over from me. My grandkids go to the catholic school in that town. When my son in law took the registration papers to the office, the clerk told him, “We don’t do that woke bullshit.”
Not so much in the public schools.

Oh, I wrongly assumed from your name you were from VT. As for woke BS, It’s in nearly every public school and unfortunately in some parochial schools too. It needs to go. Just focus on teaching the topic on hand.
