Ta’Kiya Young, 21, was suspected of shoplifting and confronted by two police officers in an Ohio grocery store parking lot.
Body camera footage showing the moments before the fatal shooting last week of a pregnant woman by an Ohio police officer was released Friday.
Ta’Kiya Young, 21, was suspected of shoplifting and confronted by two police officers in an Ohio grocery store parking lot on Aug. 24. After repeatedly being asked to get out of her vehicle by the two officers, one of whom pointed a gun at her, Young slowly accelerated her car toward an officer, who police said was struck.
An officer fired through her windshield and Young was pronounced dead shortly before 7:45 p.m., according to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.
The body camera video, which Young's family viewed before its release Friday morning, shows an officer approach a car with Young in the driver's seat.
"Out of the car," the officer can be heard saying multiple times.
"For what?" Young asks.
"They said you stole stuff. Do not leave," he responds.
A second officer then stands in front of Young’s car, puts his hand on the hood, and eventually points his gun at her through the front windshield.
"I didn't steal s---," Young says.
"Then get out," the first officer says.
The officer standing in front of Young's car is then seen pointing his gun toward her.
“Get out of the f---ing car,” the second officer says.
"No," Young is heard saying, followed by, "You gonna shoot me?"
"Get out of the car," the first officer responds while banging on Young's window with one hand and grabbing the slightly opened window with the other.
Seconds later, Young is seen turning her steering wheel and driving off. A sound is heard, as the officer in front of the car fires into the windshield at close range and moves to the driver's side.
It's not clear where Young was shot. A scream is heard as the car continues to drive away at a slow speed.
"Shots fired!" the first officer is heard saying. "Stop the God d--m car!"
The second officer appears to attempt to steer or stop the car until it hits the facade of the grocery store.
The officers then break the driver's window, and the footage comes to an end.
The officers called emergency services seconds after getting her out of the car and attempted to help Young by applying a seal to her wound to stop the bleeding, Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford said in a statement.
In a statement, Young's family and their lawyer said the shooting "is clearly a criminal act" and demanded "a swift indictment" of the officer who shot her.
"Having viewed the footage in its entirety, it is undeniable that Ta’Kiya’s death was not only avoidable, but also a gross misuse of power and authority," the statement read. "As if the pain of losing Ta’Kiya isn’t enough, we must grapple with the knowledge that her unborn daughter was also robbed of her life in this hateful act."
Young "was a beacon of love, strength, and energy to all who knew her," her family said.
"Her tragic passing has left a void that words can’t describe, especially for her two young sons, who must now grow up without the love and guidance of their mother, and while coming to understand the circumstances that led to her homicide," the statement read.
The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave. The other officer was initially also placed on administrative leave but returned to duty after Belford viewed body camera footage and saw no reason to keep him on leave, he said.
Both officers involved in the incident have not been identified.
In a statement, Belford said Young drove her car directly into one of the officers and he "fired a single shot through the windshield," which led to her death. According to Belford, the officer is a victim of attempted vehicular assault.
Young also drove away while part of the other officer's arm was in the driver's side window, making him a victim of misdemeanor assault, Belford said. As Young attempted to drive away, the officer's fingers were grabbing the window, the footage shows.
Because Young is dead, charges can't be filed, but the crime victim status of both officers remain, Belford said.
"This was a tragedy," Belford said. "Ms. Young’s family is understandably very upset and grieving. While none of us can fully understand the depths of their pain, all of us can remember them in our prayers and give them the time and space to deal with this heartbreaking turn of events."
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. They did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

I don’t know of any words yhst might have been exchanged, but decades ago, there was a twenty-ish white guy that I was later told “just wanted to go home” after being pulled over. When he started to drive toward a cop, they opened fire, killing him. Race ought not enter into it.

Ya got a 3 time loser with “Hate” tattooed across his forehead who just killed two people, and some people on this site think the cops are trained to stand in from of this suspects running vehicle in order to stop the suspect from fleeing/evading arrest.

One thing they did know for sure is that she did in fact have a very lethal weapon. Her car.

Excellent point. A baton (with which I’ve had some training) is a great tool for poking, pushing back, and swatting.
Unfortunately, too many cops decided to use their batons as a blunt instrument, as a baseball bat. So bye-bye to a great, non-lethal weapon.
Yup. And an attitude, and no apparent intent to comply with orders.
There are some bad cops. But it's a necessary evil. Otherwise, it'll be anarchy. We are already seeing that in California.
Fortunately, I don't live in a blue state.
It is very unsettling how fast a situation can escalate and in ways that none of the participants wished for.
There was NO REAL REASON to shoot her through the windshield. The cop was not being run over or down. They could have just as easily shot the tires and then gotten Her out of the car.
Another example of corrupt power trip.
That cop needs to be charged with Murder.
The underlying problem in the encounter is she didn’t really think the cop would do anything serious to her. All he had was a gun, and she didn’t think he would shoot her.
At home, in addition to guns, I also keep swords. An unarmed intruder may doubt that I would shoot him. He WILL NOT doubt that I would stick him if he advanced at me.
If I was a lawyer for the family, I might be inclined to argue that the cops knew she was a black woman, and as such they should have known that young black women are not likely to respond to police orders.
“Are you going to shoot me?” should have been a clear signal for these white racists cops to holster the weapons and let her go.
Her negritude was ignored. The cops were clearly racist.
Considering she hit him with the car, he could have inadvertently pulled the trigger when he lost his balance.

I want to believe that. But consider a plumbing company where maybe 20% of the plumbers are just bad. These bad plumbers insult their customers. They do substandard work. And they often make a bad plumbing situation worse.
The word would get around. Such a company would quickly lose trust.
The exact same thing is happening in American policing today. I can understand when a cop makes a poor decision while under stress. But way too many of them casually and deliberately do terrible things. Professionals need to always act as stone-cold professionals, period. We can demand no less.
As you noted, if this situation spins out of control, there is anarchy.
Except the cop was being run over. The longer video clearly shows him standing in front of the car with his hand on the hood. Within in a second she has turned her wheel & driven forward. He react to the threat to his life fires one shot and is knocked off his feet sidewards.

Wow. That’s really old-school. Instead, I keep police-grade pepper spray in every room of my house. It’s up high, and out of the way. But it’s there.
As for guns, I lost them all in an unfortunate boating accident years ago.

I think it's always been this way. They got away with it in the past. But now everyone has a cell phone and can post to social media, bad cops are exposed immediately.
I get it. We shouldn't be tolerating bad cops. In the meantime, we are seeing the collapse of law and order in some places in this country.

Her mistakes- pregnant and allegedly shoplifting, gets in car, officer tells her multiple times to get out and she refuses lawful commands(big surprise there /s), then she tries to drive off, striking the officer. Officer's mistake- shooting a black woman, with a family, that more than likely, did not care about what she was doing, until, something like this happens, then they come out of the woodwork, blaming the police, instead of their family member, to cash in on what happened.
I live in Blendon Township, and this happened, just, a couple miles away from me. I have been in that Kroger, many times. The Blendon Police are not trigger happy. This is the first time, I can remember, in over 20 years of living here, that an officer, had to fire their weapon. Without any bias, I believe, this was a clean shoot. This happened, because, another black person, thought, the rules and laws do not apply to them.
I do not feel sorry for her death. She brought it on herself. I feel bad for the unborn baby, and her other 2 kids, that had a moron, for a Mother, and it got her killed.
Flaunt and flout are two words that are often confused. According to Merriam-Webster, “flaunt” means “to display or obtrude oneself to public notice” while “flout” means “to treat with contemptuous disregard” 1. So, if you want to show off something, you should use “flaunt.” If you want to openly ignore or defy a rule or convention, you should use “flout.” I hope that helps!
