Family of Kaia Rolle sue Florida school after six-year-old girl was bound with zipties and PERP WALKED by cop after she 'threw a tantrum'

The family of a six-year-old girl who was arrested, bound with zipties and perp walked for causing a tantrum at school is suing a Florida police department.

Kaia Rolle, who was a first grader at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy Charter School, begged the officer not to use handcuff to restrain her before putting her in a patrol SUV and driving her away in 2019.

The ordeal went viral at the time - and shocked the nation, causing widespread outrage at the Orlando Police Department and the officers involved.

The new lawsuit, filed against the city of Orlando and several police officers, is now seeking $50,000 compensation for the child's suffering after the 'terrorizing, cruel, and senseless' arrest, as well as her medical expenses.

Her grandmother previously said that the police 'ruined' the child's life when they escorted her out of school, arrested her, and charged her with a misdemeanor battery.

The suit, filed on September 18, alleges that officers Dennis Turner and Sergio Ramos, 'had no probable cause' and 'used excessive force' during the detention.

The officers handcuffed the child with zipties and took her out of the building, before fingerprinting her at a detention center and taking her mugshot.

She was 'having a tantrum' due to her pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, which was a disorder that her school was already aware of. She was trying to keep her glasses on, but her teacher wanted her to remove them.

According to the suit, the arresting officers spoke to her grandmother Meralyn Kirkland who pleaded with them to not arrest the child. But they did not listen.

The new lawsuit claims that the child had her DNA taken at the juvenile detention center, and had to step on a step stool to take her mugshot.

I want to say "when I was in Grade School my Principal would have done this" but when I was in Grade School I don't remember a child ever doing something like this unless the child was having an epileptic seizure. If that happened the teacher got the school nurse to attend the child.

Vouchers. Take the kid to a school that would take them. Extra money for special needs kids. Everyone’s ass is covered here. Now it’s just the settlement.

THe “child” threw an absolutely insane fit - including flailing and hitting. Obviously the child had no home training - and she was perp walked because she lost her mind and wouldn’t chill. No sympathy.

The child struck a teacher...

Is in the care of her grandmother...

I think that child needs psychological care.

She’s not capable of attending public school at the moment.

And, granny, your cash grab does your granddaughter no favors.

Yep, same at my school.

This is ridiculous. Absolutely foolish response by the school and the cop. What would even possess anyone to zip tie a 6 year old, much less arrest and process them? I dont care if the girl threw a tantrum or if she even ‘assaulted’ someone. She is a 6 year old and any respectable adult should be able to ‘handle it’ appropriately. Move her to the principals office and have her parent come to school and get her.

Every school out there has what they call a “calming room” which is basically a small lockable room with dim lights and plastic furniture. A six year old who strikes a teacher belongs in the calming room (while expulsion procedures are started) until a parent or guardian shows up.

Too much coddling of juveniles. She was perp-walked because she was acting like a perp.

We did not have a “vice principal” in Grade School however we did have Mrs. Ross.

I remember Mrs Ross walking the halls with her paddle. It was one of those paddles that came from a paddle and ball toy. I honestly think the makers of that toy made it for the ball and elastic to break of and parents to use it on kids behinds.
Anyway Mrs. Ross would walk the halls with that paddle like she was General Patton and we would be quiet and BEHAVE. Unlike the kids of today.

At my grade school it was a nun who was principal. Sister Mary Wooden Ruler.

Obviously the child had no home training

Some children can behave like this even WITH home training. NATURE and nurture.

Not condoning the police officers’ actions, but I would like to know if the child has thrown any more tantrums at school since then.

My children did not fear teachers.

They feared me.

They behaved because they knew what would happen when they got home.

Conversely, they were not afraid of the school officials if they stood their ground against the bully, teacher, coach, or principal. I had their back.

My elementary Principal had an “electric” paddle on the wall. Many kids “knew somebody that knew somebody” that was spanked with it. There was even rumers of 1 or 2 kids having died from the experience. Eventually I realized it was just the guts of an electric heater wrapped around a board. Did its job though.

I find it rather odd that the grandmother waits four years before bringing this lawsuit against the school and the cops.
When she finally does sue, the financial goal
is ‘only’ $50K.

If you’re going to stir all those feelings, angst, Discovery and all that anger up again, why not go for the gusto and ask for
what?... $2 Million?

If Grandma only wants to make a point that the situation was not handled properly, then just say so, and don’ ask for any money at all. Ask for a formal apology and maybe
psycho therapy for the now 10 year old girl.

My sister specializes in these type of kids - disabilities, broken homes, etc and there is no way she would agree to this ever. She’s been pummeled, bitten, spat on, etc

She’s wore out after so much time and the stupid administrative burdens, but will always tell me they just need love and patience.

What you have here is a little psycho-demon which hasn’t been socialized. They used the zip-ties to restrain the little ward so that she couldn’t harm herself or others; and so, the cop wouldn’t harm her trying to restrain her. There are no “appropriate” ways to handle these situations! It ain’t written in a manual somewhere!

Forgot to mention by the end of the school year they all love her back so much that they are worried if she’ll be their teacher the next year or not. The special needs are usually returnees, not so much the others as they age.

The kids need to learn there are consequences for their actions. When they are adults no one will care if they are disabled or from broken homes they will just want justice and want them in jail.
