High schools in Denmark are embracing ChatGPT as a teaching tool rather than shunning it

Since its launch last year, schools worldwide have struggled with students' use of the popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT amid cheating concerns.

Mette Mølgaard Pedersen, an English teacher at Horsens Gymnasium in central Denmark, noticed that some students had submitted assignments with the help of an AI tool, just weeks after the launch of ChatGPT

"My experience was that the students would use it without any kind of thought, and in that way, it becomes an obstacle to learning, and learning is the whole project here," said Pedersen

"Because if we can have the conversation with them about how to use AI, then the whole idea that they can't talk to us about it because it's forbidden goes away.

"And whether or not you like this and whether or not you think it's problematic, you have to realise that it is here. And if you drive it underground, then you stop all conversation about it".

Maybe they should embrace Chaturbate instead. At least it would keep their DNA from propagating.

ChatGPT is very biased.

Woke bias on political topics aside, this is no surprise and I welcome it - especially for STEM topics. Teachers, lawyers, actors, and even doctors, should all watch out.

I’m a software architect, the easiest means of learning something you need to understand more of is having a chat with ChatGPT. It’s easier than ever to learn, it basically brings a summary of anything, from billions of documents, to you - rather than you searching all over web for it.

I’ve had *many* poor teachers. ChatGPT can explain, give examples, expand on details, and reexplain as necessary - without frustration or needing to focus on somebody else. Anyone not using this as a tool is going to fall behind.

All you have to do is ask them a couple of key questions about points they brought up in “their” essay (maybe with a trick question or two about points they did not mention thrown in). The cheaters will reveal themselves, get flunked, and the rest of the kids will realize it’s not a good shortcut.

From what I read here about teachers (Libs of Tik Tok) chatgpt is probably smarter and students may learn math and science.

I have to vigorously disagree with your assessment, and I am no Luddite. (and this is not a personal rebuke of any kind towards you-I simply differ in a diametrically opposed way to your assessment)

I have had many poor teachers as well, and that itself is a bad thing to work through, but...it can be survived because for every bad teacher, there exists a good teacher or good information on which to base opinions and thought.

However, having a “teacher” who can answer all questions with information deliberately biased in one direction to support the overall Leftist thought process, and do it convincingly to impressionable skulls-full-of-mush, is a terrible, TERRIBLE thing, and it should be crushed.

STEM topics are no different.

You and I may not view the underlying scientific foundations being used to justify the climate change hoax as being STEM fields, but those pushing things like ChatGPT most CERTAINLY do view them as STEM, and will convincingly and unerringly push people who accept it fully as the truth in one direction.

Using ChatGPT or some other non-human entity to explain The Ideal Gas Law or Thermodynamics is one thing. Sure, you will likely get some straightforward answers.

But if you use ChatGPT to ask about climate change and the interaction of the Ideal Gas Law or Thermodynamics affect the climate, you are going to get an answer presented as “settled science”, and thus, will be taken that way by more people than can be counted.

People should ask themselves: Have I ever encountered a supporter of a given stance on an issue I opposed, who had all the facts at their fingers, and could cleverly, articulately, and convincingly smother any knowledge I had at my own fingertips, and thus completely convince others, listening in to the discussion, if not me as well?

If you have never had that experience, I admire and salute you, but most people cannot stand up to an intellectual juggernaut that can selectively pull just about any fact out of their rear end to justify their position convincingly.

This kind of thing is worse-far worse than a human who does that.

A human who can do that dance may be found somewhat rarely, and can only speak to a relatively small audience at a time.

An entity such as ChatGPT is only limited by the number of people who will not use it, who are going to be relatively few.

In a perfect world, this would not be a biased technology, and would be used for the advancement of knowledge.

But humans will use it to advance harmful ideologies and “facts” that support those corrosive beliefs, all masquerading as impartial, truthful knowledge.

I’m not sure you are really in disagreement. When I say STEM - I mean the hard science topics (math, physics, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, etc.) and I don’t consider ‘climate change’ to be in that category.

One must understand that Chat GPT is nothing more than regurgitating “the most probable next word in a sentence/paragraph as an answer to a given specific prompt” - based on the documents it has been trained on.

I completely agree that anything else is subjective to the bias that the materials used to train it already had. So is Wikipedia - but that is *great* for technology specific details.

That said, I use it almost every day. You can have it compare and contrast technologies....e.g. “compare and contrast FPD-Link and CSI interfaces for use across high resolution and low latency camera applications like vehicle ADAS systems”. Then have it drill into details it provides based on subsequent prompts, it keeps the context of the discussion as you go. It’s an unbelievable tool - I’ve never been able to learn so fast.

It has passed the Bar exam, along with medical exams. To not use this for education purposes will leave us at a disadvantage to those that will. That said, I’m not saying use it without caution - but either way, as this technology advances it will definitely be used as an authority, I’ve already come to accept that (as flawed as that is)...and it is in its infancy too.

...but to say it isn’t a useful education tool because of possible negative responses to truth, I would argue, is a bit misguided and like most tools, it’s how you use it. We should definitely have guidelines.

I can agree with you on these things.

I appreciate the suggestion of guidelines too, but I have become far too cynical to trust the creation, implementation, or enforcement of those guidelines to our fellow man.

And I hate feeling that way.

Deep inside, there is a voice that tells me that, if I feel that way, my beloved America as I knew it, is gone forever.

I have a friend who is really into climate change. He knows I am a climate change agnostic. He was using ChatGPT to back up his positions, and I just could not believe the things ChatGPT has been programmed to spout as “settled science”. I am convinced there is much more to it than that. Namely, no discussion included as to the variability of the effect of the sun. No mention at all.

LOL, I am certainly no agnostic on man-caused climate change...

I freely concede the climate may indeed be getting warmer, just like it has in various cycles throught history.

I just think their mechanism of CO2 to describe/explain it, and all the BS surrounding ways to diminish CO2 to combat it is complete and total hogwash and lies.
