When I was a kid, I read about this in a kooky little book, "Strangely Enough" (a school book club purchase), and later one of my science teachers (7th grade) said that the apparent explanation was large forest fires in western North America.

a kooky little book, "Strangely Enough" (a school book club purchase)I had a copy of that too, and I'm pretty sure I bought it through the Scholastic Book Club. My parents would never let me get all the books I wanted from SBC, but I did all right.
