TOKYO -- Japan seafood company Maruha Nichiro is working to commercialize cultured fish meat made from fish cells as early as fiscal 2027 by teaming with a Singapore startup that owns low-cost production technology.
The companies hope to make fish paste products for Japan and other markets. There is concern that marine resources are becoming scarce as the world's population increases and a global race has ensued to develop cultured fish meat. The big fishery companies are under pressure to change their operations so that they do not rely solely on fishing.
Cultured fish meat is created by taking cells from fish and feeding them in a culture system. Cultured meat from animals such as chicken have been approved for sale in Singapore and the U.S. and is now available in restaurants. Cultured fish meat is not yet available for sale because no such product has been approved.
Maruha Nichiro will collaborate with Singapore-based Umami Bioworks, in which it invested in August, on the development of cultured fish meat products. The Japanese company may either build its own production line or bear some of Umami's investment in a manufacturing facility in Japan.
Umami's strength is in technology that uses artificial intelligence to calculate optimal conditions, such as the ratio of nutrients and culture temperature, to efficiently increase the number of cells. It is working to cultivate several species of fish, and development has progressed to the stage where grouper, for example, can be taste-tested.

“The big fishery companies are under pressure to change their operations so that they do not rely solely on fishing.”
OK....
Metastasized fish cancer cells.
MMMmmm.
Why.?
When “Krab” is too fancy, try “Klab”!
Cali crab rolls will likely have the same blah taste with the new meat.
A fish stick by any other name...
Cultured fish meat is a paste at the cell-growth stage. Umami is making prototypes of products formed like fillets using a 3D printer by mixing soy protein and other ingredients as a binding agent. The production cost of the food is estimated to be around $200 per 100 grams.
Maruha Nichiro plans to develop a cost-effective method of processing fish paste products using cultured fish meat produced by Umami as a raw material. The idea is to keep the price of the product within twice that of conventional marine products.
That is $907 per lb? correct me if I am wrong.
not is says production COST. Retail price?
Any investors?
Maybe the plan will work if they regulate the fishing industry to zero. Just like their attempt on oil.
Fish tumor……yum
Sounds disgusting, like those vegan faux meat products, but it does seem possible that in a century or two such products will feed large portions of humanity.
Propaganda will have made sure that eating natural animal proteins will be considered barbaric, inhuman, disgusting. Don’t believe it can’t happen!
They have discovered just how well propaganda can work (hey, it worked so well for Stalin and Hitler) - just look at the current climate change madness and the masses believing the BS.
Nummy! Lab grown fish cancer cells! (Hint…The best way to avoid is by making sure your meat has bones 🦴)
Parts is parts.
Sorry, Charlie. I’ll stick to Starkist.
Good replacement for imitation crab meat.
