A poor choice of a target.

In general, if somebody has thick wrists than they are probably going to be a poor target to attack.

Guy was lucky the knifeman was an idiot who didn’t know the first thing about how to use a knife properly. Not that I’m taking anything away from the MMA guy because he didn’t really have any other option and he did better than an average guy would have done.

Agreed.

And somehow the victim was boxed in between two parked cars and forced a face-off.

“knifeman was an idiot”

If I am seeing it right ... it looks like the knife was a kitchen knife of some sort.
Not that a kitchen knife can’t be effective ... but I don’t think it would be the first choice of someone with skills.

A good blade guy is a real threat .... even from 20 feet away.

If I have a knife and a guy puts me in a choke hold his fore arm is going to be sliced and diced.

“his fore arm is going “

Yup ... a really dangerous move while he still had the knife.
Glad it worked out for him, but not something I would try until the knife was out of the picture. I imagine the guys he works out with are giving him a scolding.... and a clue.

” I imagine the guys he works out with are giving him a scolding.... and a clue.”

Dont know about that, unless they do self defence seminars outside of the usual MMA training they aren’t going to be trained in knife defences, just on how to beat up another single unarmed opponent. It wouldn’t be reasonable to give him sh1t for falling back on his training. Besides, I doubt the average MMA fighter has actually had to deal with a knife wielding lunatic so they probably aren’t in a position to scold him.

And honestly, based on my own years of experience with knife defences there is no such thing as a reliable knife defence against someone with a knife and some basic skills in how to use it. Decent training raises your chances of not getting cut or stabbed by such a person from almost zero to merely more likely than not. Run fu or gun fu are your best options if someone pulls a knife, but even they arent 100% reliable if the other guy is faster than you and with a gun if you haven’t already drawn it the 20ft rule applies unless your name is Ernie Hill.

“the usual MMA training “

All the MMA and martial art guys I know ... and that's more then a few ... drill for blade attacks / disarm all the time.

And they would have taken that knife and put it where the sun don't shine before they turned him into a pretzel .

But your right .. run-fu or gun-fu would be most peoples best bet.

I personally am a master of the art of par-keenglot and I'm old ...so .. run-fu is out ...

“And they would have taken that knife and put it where the sun don’t shine before they turned him into a pretzel .”

Yeah, from this boob maybe, but not from somebody who actually knows what they are doing:

These guys are all either former or current MMA fighters, bald guy with a beard is also an ex-cop with decades of experience in taking on violent criminals and literally every single one ended up getting cut or stabbed in every round.

” from this boob”

I think everyone is in agreement that a skilled blade attack would have tuned out very different ... the guys I know train for blade/other weapon all the time.
They would have put the knife up this dudes hind hole so far he would cut his nose ...

But as I mentioned ... a blade guy with skills is a threat even at 20 ft or more.

It's just that in real life you will find more slicey dicey dudes who couldn't cut butter, then guys with real skills.

So ... train to have a better then average chance against the average.
This guy was a boob.

I would absolutely agree that knife defences are useful for that reason, a lot of guys with knives like this guy are idiots and knife defence skills are useful against these guys, but you dont even need to be a badass high level silat practitioner, an average guy with some basic rudimentary knife skills and who is really set on hurting or killing you is going to cut/stab you regardless of how well trained you are. Most I can say about how useful knife defences are against a basic knowledge, determined knifeman is that you might be able to take them out after they have stabbed you repeatedly so you more likely to be able to enjoy the privilage of dying in hospital later rather than on the street there and then. Maybe.

“after they have stabbed you repeatedly “

And that's why you don't wait to find out how much skill the blade guy has ...

If confronted with a knife .... shoot as fast as you can.
The American martial art .. “way of the gun” can be an effective defense ... but only if your ready, fast, willing to take a hit and do the deed.
One of the worst attacks is a trained blade guy with a real goal.
Situational awareness is key .. and really the only defense. (you must be a blade guy)

Lol, no I’m not a blade guy, I just know enough to be able to do realistic knife attacks when training in knife defences. I usually get my man regardless of skill level before I get taken down. When Im defending against a knife attack (and I have done a lot of that over nearly 20 years), even when Im successful my arms get “cut” and I take at least a couple of stabs before I get control. On those rare occasions when I am totally successful it’s because my partner is inexperienced and is really telegraphing the attack.

Im not going to say knife defences are useless against a semi-competent knifeman, but at most they raise your odds of not getting seriously injured or killed from 0% to almost 0%. If someone knows pencack silat or kali etc and you dont have a gun drawn out ready to shoot within 20 feet or are not able to run away. Make your peace with God because you are Donald Ducked.
