At the age of 16, Annelise Michel began blacking out at school and would soon start convulsing, vomiting, eating spiders, and coal, and even drinking her own urine.
After undergoing 67 exorcisms, she died in 1976.
She died of malnutrition, for which her parents and priest were convicted of negligent homicide.
At the time of her death, she weighed only 67 pounds.
Doctors came to the conclusion she suffered from Grand Mal Epilepsy and Psychosis. Her story directly inspired the 2005 film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose".

Scary...
Interestingly her priest thought she was demonically possessed
I have known several people who have had epilepsy, certainly blacking out and convulsing is common, but I have never known any of them to eat spiders or drink their own urine.
I worked at a behavioral health hospital. People drinking urine and eating bugs is not as unusual as you might think.
The mind is a wonderful machine. But when the wires get crossed, it does some weird stuff.
The story that inspired the film was of a boy. I knew a priest who knew the priest. Beatty described it
Is this the entire article? On Twitter, I only see a Before and After photograph of the young lady. I do believe in the possibility of demon possession, but I also think there have been many incidents of physical and psychological illness being misinterpreted as possession. You don’t hear of it happening very often within the United States these days. More commonly such stories will be from third world countries in Central America, Haiti, Mexico and parts of Africa. Very sad.
Everyone loses when they jump to unprovable conclusions like this one. Her parents most likely loved their daughter, but they apparently did the wrong thing for righteous and sincere reasons.
Nowadays when it happens in America, one often finds that at least one of the parents or caregivers is themselves afflicted with paranoid schizophrenic delusions.
I hated the movie because Rose said the devil is good because proof of his existence is proof of God’s existence. No, Rose, that’s perverted. Evil is proof of evil and good is proof of good. Get good by eliminating the things in your life that are stressing you. At the end of the film after the church failed to save her she said, if it glorifies God for me to be possessed by the devil then I am willing to let Satan eat me up. No, Hollywood, this is perverse. The points the film tries to make is hopelessness and despair, that the devil can do anything he wants to anybody because God and humans are powerless. The movie should have been called Satan Wins. Perverted.
The girl was psychotic as well as epileptic it seems
True, she shouod have had an exorcism, (incase it was a true case of demon possession) but also, at the same time, she should, have been seen medically, and diagnosed correctly. It was apparently the medical profession that failed the girl.
So etimes it’s hard to distinguish between demon possession and medical conditions, so the right approach is to treat both.
Lots of demon possessed people these days open whemselves up to the possession through use of drugs, sin dominated lifestyle, etc- and although they don’t realize it, they do get possessed because they have abandoned themselves to the filth of the world and become available to the evil one for possession as a result.
Some folks, like ms-13 are just so over the top evil that they truly are demon possessed, or at the very least, if not truly possessed, then demon conjoled- or demon influenced- because they allow their lives to be influenced by the evil one whether they realize it or not
[[she said, if it glorifies God for me to be possessed by the devil then I am willing to let Satan eat me up. ]]
IF she didn’t say this, the family should sue for hollywood besmirching rose. What a horrid thing to represent her as saying if she didn’t actually say anything like that.
“The story goes that Blatty heard about the Maryland case while he was a student at Georgetown University. In mid-1949, a number of newspapers reported an alleged possession and eventual exorcism of a boy known as ‘Robbie’ or ‘Roland Doe’.“
It should only take one time. They fear the name of Jesus.
His name is Ronald Hunkeler. Grew up in Cottage City, just outside DC. Went to be successful working at NASA.
Its interesting to note that for 4 years, her family sought intervention from various forms of “medical science” before considering exorcism.
So claims of “superstition” from the Twitter crowd are wrong.
Clearly the 67 exorcisms were not successful.

“After undergoing 67 exorcisms...”
Talk about your basic definition of stupidity.
67 exorcisms didn’t cure her - who’d have guessed?
The case of Annelise Michel is highly disputed. One would like to have confidence that a highly publicized trial in court arrived at a correct determination on the facts, but we all know that is not necessarily so.
As for the possession that was adapted into The Exorcist, information in the diary of a priest involved shows that the possession was far more extensive and tenacious than shown in the movie. Notably, the child possessed -- a boy -- had become involved in the use of the Ouija board and other spiritualist practices through an aunt who lived with his family up until her death.
In Catholic belief, that may have opened the boy up to demonic attack, possibly with the assistance of the spirit of the deceased aunt. In Catholic theology, the prize sought by the demonic side was the boy's degradation and his soul, along with terror to the family and the priests and the faithful involved in the case.
For those wanting more on the subject of exorcism, I recommend Fr. Malachi Martin's Hostage to the Devil, which was based on his study of the subject commissioned by the Catholic Church. Martin's death by apparent accident years later is suspected by some to have manifested signs of being a demonic attack.
“It should only take one time. They fear the name of Jesus.”
Sometimes it takes more than one. That’s been documented many times.
