I know I'm a heretic, flame away.
When they did it live on ABC with John Legend and Alice Cooper, did you notice that the audience in the stands sang along with the chorus? And not just “Hosanna,” but on all the choruses? It gives you a hint of how that opera has become a part of Anglo-American musical tradition.
Sad how far musicianship has deteriorated since the original.
I’m more of a commie godspell kinna guy lol
The original movie was the first movie I ever saw. I think I still have most of the songs memorized.
Someday I want to get the original soundtrack album. We had it back in 1972 or whenever, and my siblings and I about wore it out. I could probably still sing many of the songs, that is if I could sing.
i wore out that album.
Legend was horrible, he looked distracted and underrehearsed, and his voice was thin. Dude had a case of the nerves, knowing his Christ was a piss-poor choice from go.
Alice was fine, but it was no different than repurposing his "Candidate" strut schtick that those of us who have seen Alice since the 70s saw right through -- director David Leveaux made no effort to make good with what he had.
Circling back, a few years before Legend, having seen Ted Neely do "Gethsemane" from the front row in one of the final times he ever performed the role of Jesus Christ, forget John Legend.
Ted is the Jesus GOAT, and Legend is the Judas GOAT.
I hope Our Lord himself embraces Ted when his time comes. You could have powered a hydroelectric dam to light NYC for the 6:44 of Neely's "Gethsemane", while the tears flowed down the aisle. John Legend couldn't elucidate a fart out of the same crowd...
You sound like Johnny Depp (I know. Clap him in irons).
Yeah, this song is just fabulous. When the play originally came out in the 70s I played that album constantly. What a musical!
They did this song good in this movie!!!
Historically inaccurate. Everybody knows Jesus was black.
Besides, I liked the 1973 film best.

Ian Gillan (Lead/Deep Purple) is the one playing Jesus and singing on Hosannah.
I was just like that and can’t sing either, although there was one single refrain from one of the songs I could sort of sing, but can’t remember which.
I had the LP also. It was a very good album.
I remember that Album in LP...
and yes it has issues theologically and
Until recently I couldn’t tell you
What they were . I’m watching the “Ten Commandments” right now and old Moses is still busting the Red Sea !
Truly I say to you...
Never heard of HOSANA 2000.
The songs ARE memorable.
The DVD is out there.
I don’t really want to watch the movie, just listen to the songs. Maybe I’ll get a CD, but not through Amazon. The versions for sale there have some problems, according to the product reviews.
I think I said this before… when I saw the classic Deep Purple lineup on the Perfect Strangers tour, they broke into Jesus Christ Superstar during the breakdown section of Strange Kind of Woman …. Ian smiled approvingly.
