0:00·[Music]
0:01·today we're going on an epic adventure
0:03·to a place you've never been before the
0:06·secret rooms of the
0:09·pantheon pass by this Piaza several
0:11·times a day this is the Piaza the Ronda
0:15·and of course everyone loves the
0:16·pantheon love to jump inside all the
0:18·time but this is also a local
0:20·neighborhood down the corner here is one
0:22·of my favorite coffee shops which is
0:25·sakio this is a place teaming with
0:27·history this is a place teaming with
0:30·local community and this is part of my
0:32·neighborhood i' like to share that with
0:34·you as we go around and explore ancient
0:37·Rome hey it's Darius Arya archaeologist
0:40·standing in front of a structure you
0:42·know really well it's the pantheon it's
0:43·the best preserved Temple from ancient
0:45·Roman times everyone knows this famous
0:48·Portico or front porch and behind it the
0:52·amazing rotunda with a largest
0:55·unreinforced concrete Dome weighing
0:57·about 5,000 tons but did you know that
1:01·there are secret spaces hidden places
1:04·within the pantheon today I'm going to
1:06·take you to the secret rooms of the
1:08·pantheon you've probably never seen
1:11·before let's go explore let's take a
1:13·look at this plan to understand the
·Pantheon's secret rooms (the grottoes- grottoni)- floor plan; grottoni rooms and Basilica of Neptune: engineering necessities of Pantheon
1:16·basic components of the panth that we'll
1:17·talk about today there's the porch on
1:19·the right there's the Rotunda in the
1:21·center and then we have highlighted in
1:23·red that special new area that's
1:25·constructed to sustain the Rotunda known
1:28·as the groni those those are the rooms
1:30·we're going to be exploring and next to
1:32·it further south is the remains of this
1:35·massive Hall known as the pilica of
1:38·Neptune and you can see from the cross
1:41·hatch marks the three X's represent then
1:44·a large vated ceiling that extended for
1:48·a very large area so with this
1:50·reconstructed model we can see there
1:52·were ton of the pantheon in the distance
1:54·and what's right behind it that large
1:56·Hall the Basilica of Neptune was quite m
1:59·massive so behind the retunda there's
2:02·another structure look at this huge
2:04·brick rectangular structure buding up
2:08·against the southern side of the Rotunda
2:10·of the pantheon what's it for it's not a
2:14·hall for receiving people instead it's
2:17·structural in the Renaissance times it
2:20·becomes known as the gron because there
2:22·a series of grot likee structures
2:24·they're radio walls that are buttressing
2:26·up the southern side of the retunda the
2:29·pan on and then encased in this nice
2:32·brick structure so it's functional it's
2:35·structural but it's not something for
2:37·the public to access I'm going to take
2:39·you inside we're going to explore the
2:41·secret rooms of the pantheon not
2:44·normally open to the public we can
2:46·explore that history that little known
2:48·aspect of the
2:52·pantheon the structure behind me is the
2:55·Basilica of Neptune it's only one
2:57·portion of it with a Monumental app
3:00·but the structure was enormous and
3:02·stretched on and is underneath this
3:05·building over here so you have a large
3:07·Hall this is the Basilica or the
3:10·tribunal Hall rebuilt after the fire of
3:13·110 this is going to be attributed
3:15·ultimately to hadrien but originally
3:19·there was the Stow of Neptune here in
3:21·the time of Augustus built by agria now
3:25·if we
3:26·look at this as the back wall of the
3:30·Basilica of Neptune what's behind it is
3:33·that structure known as the Graton
3:35·that's where we have those radial walls
3:37·that are buttressing up the uh southern
3:40·end of the Rotunda and what's up on top
3:42·of it we can see two projecting flying
3:47·buttresses so they're really concerned
3:50·as they're rebuilding the trenic
3:52·hadrianic pantheon they're concerned
3:55·with its stabilization they don't just
3:57·build the reton structure which we're
3:59·going to go inside and investigate but
4:02·they also put on top flying buttresses
4:05·that projected forward and connected to
4:08·the full height of this Basilica of
4:12·Neptune so let's step inside and one of
·Tour of the grottoni rooms
4:15·the first amazing things that we'll see
4:17·is the 7th Century icon that was
4:20·dedicated by Pope bonfice IV dedicated
4:23·to the mother of God panaga hria the all
4:28·holy director we can pass through here
4:30·behind this curved wall That's the
4:32·curved apps wall of the Basilica of
4:35·Neptune we can make our way through
4:37·these irregular spaces remember this is
4:39·just a structural phenomenon this isn't
4:41·a place for the public to visit and we
4:43·can Ascend the stairs to go up to the
4:46·second floor and we can just see already
4:50·how massive the greton structures
4:53·actually
4:55·are and now we see the full height and
4:58·the large volumes in the vaulted ceiling
5:00·where at the top on the left ear we can
5:02·see the top of the apps of the Basilica
5:04·of Neptune we have these spaces
5:06·decorated with many architectural
5:07·features of the pantheon as we'll
5:10·explore and it really is an incredible
5:13·opportunity that sometimes the ministry
5:15·opens up these spaces to the public so
5:18·looking around here we see plenty of
5:21·relieving arches that are inserted in
5:23·the fabric of the walls so we want to
5:25·always think about these huge massive
5:28·walls with openings this case the apps
5:31·so you need to sustain the weight from
5:33·above just taking a
5:35·walk behind the pantheon rotunda this is
5:40·the famous
5:41·gron there's an exhibition here it's
5:44·temporary but to be in these spaces
5:47·you're getting a much better idea of the
5:50·engineering
5:52·behind the construction of the pantheon
5:55·it's so much more than retunda and the
5:56·porch this is the back side that's been
5:58·forgotten this is the backside has been
6:00·neglected this is the part of the
6:03·pantheon that ensured that very rotunda
6:06·did not collapse it's considered to be
6:08·an add-on it's considered to be
6:11·secondary in the
6:13·plan but due to cracks in the uh
6:18·cylinder of the pantheon this back end
6:21·was added basically wedged in between
6:24·the pantheon runda and the so-called
6:27·basilic of Neptune what a spectacular
6:29·add-on never accessible to the public
6:32·it's an extraordinary visit it's an
6:33·extraordinary opportunity to delve in to
6:36·the pantheon this is one of the great
6:38·secrets that you never see one of the
6:41·great aspects of visiting the Craton
·Pantheon brickstamps and Basilica of Neptune decorations
6:43·spaces is that we can see this great
6:46·cataloging brick tiles have the stamps
6:48·that help us date the pantheon to the
6:50·times of hrin and
6:53·trun and it really is just an incredible
6:56·space to walk through to be impressed by
6:59·this incredible architecture all
7:02·original brick-faced walls and vated
7:06·ceilings you don't only have the area of
7:09·the Groton this series of structures
7:12·here that act to brace the Rotunda from
7:16·the south of the retunda we're actually
7:18·in a in a an obscure space between uh
7:21·the retunda of the pantheon and the
7:24·so-called Basilica of Neptune and in
7:27·fact right here they have all these
7:29·incredible panels now some of them in
7:32·Marble Daye of the time of hadrin still
7:35·decorate part of the Interior Space of
7:38·the basilic of Neptune that you can see
7:40·today but there's so much more that's on
7:44·display and preserved so you think about
7:45·this space today is used for exhibitions
7:49·but it's also a museum it's also got
7:52·some of this incredible engineering that
7:54·dates the time of trun and hadrien it's
7:57·contemporary it's part of the
7:58·construction C of the pantheon and we
8:01·can
8:04·explore so let's explore some more these
8:08·spaces of the Graton here's the curved
·Grottoni vaulting
8:11·wall of the retunda and we can see then
8:13·by the vaulting we can see by the
8:16·construction that pretty early on in the
8:19·construction of the retunda they
8:20·determined to make the greton structures
8:23·to integrally be joined to the Rotunda
8:27·and we can see the vaulted ceilings
8:30·different kinds of vating involved you
8:32·can also see little relics remains of
8:36·marble that once decorated the pantheon
8:39·also some relics of it having been a
8:40·church but throughout we see the
8:43·insertion of relieving arches including
8:45·in this impressive vaulting up above we
8:48·can even see the impression left from
8:50·the planks to which the concrete was
8:53·poured that's one of the great Treasures
8:56·the great examples we can have of
8:59·exploring the Graton is getting closer
9:01·to the fabric getting closer to the
9:03·construction technique that makes the
9:05·pantheon so impressive so it's really
9:09·behind the curtains view of the pantheon
9:12·and its construction that we can admire
9:14·so much more even than being inside the
9:17·Rotunda Hall itself this is the real
9:19·engineering of the pantheon at work
9:22·invisible to us
9:24·today now let's head back downstairs one
9:27·more opportunity to look at this Marvel
9:31·that curved apps wall which has on top
9:34·of it a series of blocks of travertin
9:37·stone we're behind again still the apps
9:39·of the Basilica of
9:40·Neptune and when we do finally
9:44·exit we're going to exit in style we're
9:48·leaving the greton and we're going to
9:50·directly connect to the pantheon rotunda
9:53·itself so there's still ancient
9:55·passageways that bring us right into the
9:58·heart of this incredible Roman Temple
10:01·the pantheon and truly I hope you enjoy
10:04·these secret rooms and have better
10:06·appreciation of the architecture and the
10:08·engineering that went into the
10:11·construction of Rome's greatest Imperial
10:14·Temple hey this is DARS R for ancient
10:16·Rome live I want to invite you to join
10:18·me and my colleagues in a course this

10:33·you know we're going to explore some
10:34·sites that you've never heard of There's
10:36·an opportunity to see live archaeology

10:42·archaeology of the city please join me

Wish I’d known about the secret rooms when we visited. All I remember is the hole in the ceiling.
