Kazakhstan’s egg help to Russia causes grumbling

Kazakhstan has agreed to help Russia alleviate its chronic shortage of chicken eggs only to spark grumbling from domestic consumers in border areas who now say there is not enough for them to buy.

The pledge of assistance arrived at a meeting on trade issues between Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin and his Russian counterpart, Alexei Overchuk, in Astana on January 17.

Eggs featured on the agenda. As the Russian state statistics service has reported, the price of the commodity soared by more than 61 percent last year, prompting the government in Moscow to adopt some radical fixes. One was a plan to exempt 1.2 billion eggs from customs duties in the first half of this year.

But first Russia needs to find somebody to supply the eggs. At the Astana meeting, Overchuk asked for Kazakhstan’s help, and he received a positive response.

Zhumangarin instructed the Agriculture Ministry to increase the supply of eggs to Russia as soon as possible.

“In matters of food security, flexibility in decision-making is necessary,” he said.

But this gesture of goodwill is not going down well in Kazakhstan, which has struggled for years to cope with its own inflation woes.

On January 18, residents in the northwestern city of Uralsk told journalists that they have seen a quota imposed on the number of eggs being sold at state-run stores, where goods are traded at subsidized prices. The limit is 10 per person.

This, along with many similar posts, tells a tale. M E S S A G I N G

One finds something interesting about Eurasianet, the latest "egging one on" source:

Quite interesting, as eurasianet.org was registered in 2000 in New York. Their "About" page states "Eurasianet is a tax-exempt [501(c)3] organization based at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute, one of the leading centers in North America of scholarship on Eurasia. We are funded by Google, the Open Society Foundations, the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the National Endowment for Democracy, Columbia University’s Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies and other grant-making institutions, and are advised by a board of trustees."

NUDGING. MESSAGING. From the hallowed halls of Columbia University and with financial "egging on" from those wack Google and Open Society folks.

As to other egg stories which seem to NOT generate as much New York-based grumbling:

Begging? An interesting characterisation. The article states: “.... exempt 1.2 billion eggs from customs duties....” Sounds like buying. Or at least an offer to buy.

I heard there was a huge shipment of eggs from Azerbaijan last week in the holds of an A-50 and an IL-22 that were about to transit the Sea of Azov enroute to Moscow.

I wonder what happened to it.

Translation: If there’s not enough for both Russia and Kazakhstan, then Kazakhstanis are the ones who should starve. Russia is the conqueror in this relationship, after all.

Here is just a small Russian grocery store. A Canadian couple moved to Russia to escape western tyranny, I presume. Anyway, they show a lot of prices on different items, in rubleswhich is .011 to the US dollar.

.

Eggs are the standard 10 pack per carton there. 129 rubles = 1.75 dollars per dozen as sold here. The video was posted about 10 hours ago. As demonstrated here, Russia is 20 cents cheaper that Aldi's, and 2 cents higher that Walmart.

>

Here is the price of eggs at Aldi's and Walmart today.

.

So, what is your fascination of Russian eggs prices and shortages?
