A study led by researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University and Tongji University found that there were 182 outbreaks of C. auris in China in 2023.
That is a marked increase from previous years, when the numbers ranged from eight to 26.
.............................
The increase in cases could be due to enhanced efforts to detect the fungus.

Candida yeast/fungus was the first indication of the beginning of the AIDS crisis in the late 70's and early 80's. In San Francisco the gay community was hit with Candida months before anyone knew what was going on (which was compromised immune systems, of course).
There are many variants of Candida; I think "albicans" was/is most prevalent among AIDS patients.
Anyway, point being, "Candida" is nothing new, but this variant "auris" does sound troubling.
