Are we worse at Moon landings than 50 years ago?
BBC ^

Posted on 02/04/2024 3:29:14 PM PST by nickcarraway

Japan's Moon lander ended up on its nose when it made its historic touchdown on the lunar surface. A US lunar lander has "no chance" of making a soft landing on the Moon due to a fuel leak.

We've set foot on the Moon multiple times. So why all the recent mission failures?

Anyone here doubt SpaceX could do it pretty easily if they cared to?

Yes I do; SpaceX is very far behind the initial projections with the current NASA Artemis-StarShip plans. As it stands now, China has a very good chance of getting to the moon first.

Further, the whole Artemis plan is very expensive and likely unworkable in practice. It will take some 20 launches to get 4 guys to the moon. That’s after they get the Lunar Orbiter Module up and working.

StarShip has no crew escape-on-descent. Only on ascent. Unnecessary safety risk. Even the Apollo Lunar Module had this crew safety feature.

With luck, StarShip 3 will make it to orbit next month, and hopefully they will be able to prove the refueling concept this year as well. Without that, the whole Artemis mission fails.

SpaceX’s Boca Chica site is in jeopardy from environmental lawsuits. If the envirowackos’ case (Sierra Club) succeeds they will have to close the site. This will take many months or years to get through the courts, and the site can still operate, if they get a stay of execution against the various agencies that grant permits (and does not violate prior agreements), while the case goes on.

Most of the won’t do interviews ... will not swear on a Bible that they landed on the moon

Buzz Aldrin age 94
David Scott age 91
Charles Duke age 88
Harrison Schmitt age 88

all the others have passed away. RIP.

How many people that age give interviews to stupid reporters who ask even more stupid questions?

Space X has a manned lunar landing scheduled this year

Sorry, the schedule has slipped at least 10 years now to 2034-2036. And may never happen due to many many problems stemming from the costs and needless complexity of the NASA plan.

The whole plan is some 20 launches just to get 4 guys to the moon, depends on SpaceX’s refueling concept, and on the Lunar Orbiter - which does not exist.

It’s like they say, technology is great when it works.
But if everything tech is as glitchy as my cell phone..we could be in serious trouble.

Every dollar spent today on space “exploration” is money down a pointless rathole.

Until a really big asteroid or comet decides to call Earth home. Not if, but when

That was one of the Apollo photos NASA destroyed! How did you get it? Are you a spokesperson for our Masters? Did you get prior approval from the Master pictured?

Slide rules are somewhat obsolete, what with computers and all. 😊

Ditto 9-11.

To be clear I know it happened. I question how it happen and who orchestrated it (FBI).

I have one from the 1940’s. The gold embossed name on the case is “David Packard”. Not sure if it’s that David Packard but I like to think it is.

“China has a very good chance of getting to the moon first.”

The biggest advantage they have is they won’t care if some astronauts die in failed attempts.

The US will freak out if that happens to their astronauts.

How many people that age give interviews to stupid reporters who ask even more stupid questions?

We did not have the fuel, navigational computers, nor radiation protection to make it safely to the moon and back (476,000 miles round trip). Therefore we faked it and killed whistleblower Gus Grissom to keep him quiet.

Question for you: Why have we not gone above 400 miles since? (Hint…think Belts)

The way you know the manned moon landings happened is by the many ham radio operators internationally who had dishes they pointed in the right direction.

Those things have beamwidths of a degree. Or less. Nothing off to the side gets heard. There are thousands of these guys who heard the show personally, without involvement of NBC, ABC or CBS. Or BBC. Or anyone else. This does not mean every ham had a dish like that. Thousands did. Globally.
