Elon Musk received an invitation from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to join the desktop Linux community in a fascinating exchange on the social media site X. This gesture came shortly after Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with Microsoft Windows OS, highlighting the compulsory requirement for a Microsoft account to use his newly purchased computer. Buterin’s proposal highlights a broader movement in favor of open-source software, reflecting the critical juncture in which business executives are candidly exploring alternatives to popular operating systems.

I don't need a Microsoft account to use the Windows laptop I'm typing this post on.

To Musk's point, Microsoft pushes setting up a MS account kind of front and center when setting up your laptop. You have to click No in many places and such to eventually set up a login for the OS not tied to a MS account. Put's it's a stretch to say MS requires it to run Windows.

I skipped Bitcoin, went with Ethereum. So far, so good and I think it has a good future.

Very few of us have physical access to one of those servers.

It’s really annoying when you are setting up pro on a laptop for an organization and you have to do a stupid dance to create a local account because adding a microsoft account to a new machine that’s going to be added to a domain is stupid

Is your organization large enough to do disc imaging so you don’t have to do that user account dance on every setup?

Not mine, and no. I have heard that real IT guys and IT departments just install from an image and then and push the group policy to automate the whole process. I do new laptops so infrequently I can’t even remember the dance half to the time and have to look it up again

I didn’t need a “Microsoft Account” for my new laptop. I used my old live.com email address and password. That was it.

I held on to Win7 for as long as I could because it was the last Windows OS designed around the idea of helping users get things done. Later Windows OS’s are built around the idea “how do we pour crap into the users brain to make them buy stuff and believe what we want?” I was slow to consider Linux, but I’ll be following up with this suggestion as well.

My understanding is that you don't have to pay for it, unlike Microsoft and their constant desire to make you rent their operating system.

Musk's problem is that Twitter/X has too many bots. By making you register, he's curtailing bot activity, because it's a lot harder for bots to feed crap into the system when they have to register individual accounts.

He's not trying to force you to pay him the way Microsoft is, he's trying to keep out the vast hordes of fake accounts that existed on the Twitter platform before he bought it.

Till the government pulls the plug on alternative "currency."

The minute any government sees these crypto currencies as a threat, they can declare them illegal within their borders, and people will end up with just files on computers.

The US Constitution grants only the government the ability to produce money. As soon as they decide to crack down on alternate currencies, the stuff becomes worthless.
