But my husband grew up growing veggies with his dad and says that ‘giant’ things generally don’t taste as good..

Just like the big Red Delicious Washington Apples. They were big and red but tasted like a baked potato. They were over engineered and modified to the point they lost all their flavor. Entire orchards had to be cleared the only thing they were good for was sider and applesauce.

It was over selection for longer storage for supermarkets that doomed them. Then Fuji and HoneyCrisp came along.

I’ve always wondered what the pre supermarket era Red Delicious tasted like. I wonder if anyone has any of the original cultivars on an old farm somewhere.

You are exactly right. I have tried quarter-sized blueberries and they have no flavor at all.
