Fifty-six years after a Florida milkman vanished after doing his route, the mystery of his murder has been solved, closing one of the oldest cold cases

A murderous mystery has finally been solved as fifty-six years after the truth behind a Florida milkman's death has been uncovered.

The man failed to return home after his rounds, and now the mystery has been solved, closing the oldest cold case in Indian River County Sheriff’s Office history. Two people who say the suspect confessed to them helped investigators finally understand who killed Hiram “Ross” Grayam, a decorated World War II veteran who was fatally shot from behind while working on April 11, 1968, delivering milk.

So long after his murder, his family were shocked to have new information. The victim’s son Larry Grayam, who was 16 at the time of his father’s death, said the closure of the case has brought mixed emotions.

“It devastated my family as a young kid, and caused me to actually lead a life of public safety and work as a photojournalist as well,” Larry Grayam said. His father, Hiram Grayam, 47, was a married father of three from Vero Beach, was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was last seen by a witness talking to two males who then got into his truck, Sheriff Eric Flowers said Thursday at a news conference. The witness “said Mr. Grayam engaged them in conversation and announced that he would be back shortly,” Flowers added.

The next day, Grayam’s body and truck were located in a wooded area in what was described as a “chilling scene,” the sheriff’s office described in a statement. 16 separate investigations occurred through April 1974 in an effort to solve the case, to no avail.

Yes indeed, 1968 was when the communist revolution in America should have been forcefully & permanently squashed...

The radical “be all you can be” so-called “anti-war” (now for war) versus “the man,” with bad people “hitch hiking” on the road, scamming people.

No Internet that would relay the problem to unwary drivers who would stop to help.

Tragic

I remember passing newspapers when it was only me and the milkman on the street.

The article mentions justice being served. I don’t think that ever happened.

But it’s cool they solved it even after all these years.

"The sheriff’s office said the developments in “the milkman homicide” case “stand as beacons of hope for families like the Grayams, ensuring that no victim is forgotten, and no crime is unpunished.”"

Is there a stupid statement generator or training somewhere? Sure he was never punished. Williams died before he was ever charged.

So, no reason given as to why he did this?

A blonde heard that milk baths would make her more beautiful, so she left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk. When the milkman read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door to clarify the point.

The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, “I found your Note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 1.5 gallons?”

The blonde said, “I want 15 gallons of milk. I’m going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath”.

The milkman asked, “Do you want it pasteurized?”

The blonde said, “No, just up to my boobs.”

Perp’s dead (he also denied being involved before dying) and the family member who reported his ‘prison confession’ apparently didn’t relate a ‘why’.

I’d bet ‘nice guy falling for a predator’s sob story’ is likely. A little white guilt probably played a role as well, considering the era.
