WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will consider Monday whether banning homeless people from sleeping outside when shelter space is lacking amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.
The case is considered the most significant to come before the high court in decades on homelessness, which has reached record levels in the United States.
In California and other Western states, courts have ruled that it’s unconstitutional to fine and arrest people sleeping in homeless encampments if shelter space is lacking.
A cross-section of Democratic and Republican officials contend that makes it difficult for them to manage encampments, which can have dangerous and unsanitary living conditions.
But hundreds of advocacy groups argue that allowing cities to punish people who need a place to sleep will criminalize homelessness and ultimately make the crisis worse as the cost of housing increases.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the court Monday morning with silver thermal blankets and signs like “housing not handcuffs.”

How can it be cruel and unusual punishment, when there is no punishment?
I’m closely monitoring this, as certain areas out west are known for their extreme measures. When traveling in my camper, I often stop at locations like Walmart, remote areas, rest stops, or Cracker Barrel to spend the night.
In some of these places, if you stop and eat inside your camper, there’s a tendency for people to assume you’re homeless simply because you’re in a camper.
The SC should be pro active for Trump and stop the anti American assault on ALL of us via our own laws !

Minor my butt! This is a very important decision. We either get to clean out the bums or we look like a 3rd world country.
Is it me, or does there not seem to be more pressing and important decisions the nation needs from SCOTUS?
A city that can't ban homeless encampments should also be forced to refund taxpayers' money for homeless programs.
With homelessness on the rise, the Supreme Court will weigh bans on sleeping outdoors

How can homelessness be on the rise when our economy is kicking so much @zz?
there should be areas for sleeping rough, not where ever they want to
We have a Park here called ‘Veteran’s Park’ that the cops have to patrol on ATV’s to keep the homeless guys from ‘camping’ in it.
They made a huge mess of it before the county started patrolling, trash and garbage...................
The Supers are being used by the enemy democrats to open more gummint intrusion into our taking our freedoms back.
We already have the right to protect our home land from all enemies foreign and . . . . home grown domestic bums and illegals.
yup, parks are not campgrounds, let alone a Vet’s park
