The Verbivores | 10/1/02 | Teacher

Posted on 10/01/2002 5:01:12 AM PDT by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

cynosure \SY-nuh-shoor; SIN-uh-shoor\, noun:
cynosural; adjective

1. Anything to which attention is strongly turned; a center of attraction.
2. That which serves to guide or direct.
3. The northern constellation Ursa Minor, which contains the North Star; also, the North Star itself.

Before another year elapses Rome will be the cynosure of the world.
--Benjamin Disraeli, Lothair

Etymology: Middle French & Latin; Middle French, Ursa Minor, guide, from Latin cynosura Ursa Minor, from Greek kynosoura, from kynos oura, literally, dog's tail

Mandela presided over great wealth earned by others and still he left South Africa in chaos. He helped to reduce a wealthy nation to near poverty status. He stands next to Saddam and defends Iraq not because he believes so much in Iraq's cause but because they are brothers in the truer sense that FOX, CNN or ABC can comprehend. Saddam and Mandela are of the same heart and they know it. All of the evil of this world know each other.

I like this writer. Talk about hitting the nail on the head.

ex-cons want to vote. TOUGH! they shoulda thought of that before they did the crime. I agree with Todd Gaziano:

Todd Gaziano, director of the Heritage Foundation legal and judicial studies department, said allowing inmates and felons to vote dilutes the vote of law-abiding citizens. "It helps prevent dilution of the vote of law-abiding citizens who are in high-crime neighborhoods where law enforcement issues are of a particular importance," he said. "It's part of the original punishment. It's not arbitrary. It's on the books."

Even my kids know there are consequences for actions. YOU SHOULDA THOUGHTA THAT, is a common refrain at the xshouse.

I know its early, But I really gotta get this off my chest.

I cant believe I live in a State, and by extension we live in a Country where people are so bereft of common decency, and Honor, that 1. The democratic party thought they could slide Torriscumbag in, because there was a (d) next to his name, 2. Where the Governor of the State, puts party ahead of Gubernatorial responsibility, by helping the Party through the use of his office, try to negate the mistake they made, by not living up to their responsibility to the voters in the first place. 3. where the State Attorney general follows suit, and ORDERS county clerks across the state to suspend Ballot preperation, on the stretgnth of a letter from Torricelli. 4.Where the news media is already beginning to excoriate the Republicans, claiming that BOTH major parties should be represented at Election Day, as if it is their fault the Dummycrats are slated a piss poor candidate 5. That the average Voter is stupid enough to buy into it, and also not be outraged at the governors conduct. 6. That the Governor now elected seems to feel he only represents a small segment of the people of New Jersey, (namely those taken in by the DNC, to support Torricelli) and Not all the people, which would mandate a more neutral position.

I have never been so disgusted in all my life. This is on a par with Slick willie. At least he went before the Polls.

You need no further stimulants today, I think you are just about as wired as you can get, and still be legal.

It's going to be a bloody battle in NJ.

This goes beyond Dirty Trick.

Judge Napolitano, (Who served in NJ) confirmed my reading of the Law, on the point.

They are legally disallowed to cange the ballot inside of 51 days.

If Torch Resigns, he can be replaced by the Governor, as a Candidate outside of thirty days.

If he resigns Inside of thirty Days, McGreevy can appoint a successor to fill the vacancy. And Suspend the Election till 2003

That having been said SCOTUS will likely take a very dim view of that, because the term of the senate is 6 years not seven, but anytime you are forced to rely on the courts, you may as well be flipping coins, and politically, will SCOTUS really want to decide for a Republican, in a case that determines the Majority, so close to being accused of perfidy in the 2000 election (wrongly, but nonetheless).

The only other hope is that the Republicans win the Majority wiithout NJ, then disqualify whomever (if not Forrester) NJ sends to Washington (The Senate is the Sole Constitutional judge of elections to that Body)

You know it is not Just NJ. What we have, now, is bad faith legal maneuvering, in the field of election law, because it is so underdeveloped, and you cant possibly figure for every scenario.

Forrester is ahead on that count with....

"The laws of the state of New Jersey do not contain a 'we think we're going to lose so we get to pick someone new' clause,"

However, what F needs to do, RIGHT NOW, is get out in front and Clearly define himself, before the DNC, and any replacement they may try to field, starts going negative on Him.

With no Face on the Democratic side, to respond, he can paint his picture as he likes, and build an image for the Public, that will boost his favorables, forcing an opponent to do more deconstruction, then he can play the "they have no issues, so they are going negative" game.

Good Morning reach!

Took me a while, but I've finally overcome that problem, and am ready to attend classes again.

A piece of advice: when you're wandering in a desert, and your cynosure is a mountaintop in the distance, don't forget that there may be other oasis' closer to you. Focus on the destination, but don't forget to scan the horizon, or you may walk right past a refuge.

Anyone got the Thermos?

Good Morning All,

What a beautiful morning it is here in the Garden State. Coffee, who needs coffee? It would only slow me down.

NJ is today's cynosure.
Dems thought it was their sinecure.
The Torch has been hosed.
Doug runs unopposed.
Their Senate grip's not so secure.
