Word For The Day, Tuesday, 10/29/02
The Verbivores | 10/29/02 | The Teachers

Posted on 10/29/2002 4:43:01 AM PST by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

moribund \MOR-ih-bund\, adjective:
moribundity; noun
moribundly; adverb

  1. In a dying state; dying; at the point of death.
  2. Becoming obsolete or inactive.
  3. not growing or changing; without force or vitality

If talking about books -- a subject often more personal than politics and more arguable than religion -- can be bruising, it can for the same reasons be thrilling. Yet serious literary conversation as an avocation, as an impromptu congress of amateurs, has been moribund for half a century.
--Brian Hall, "The Group," New York Times, June 6, 1999

Etymology: Latin moribundus, from mori to die. Date: circa 1721

Dick Morris is sounding moribund
Sounding as if pubbies are ruin'd.
The president should
Hide in the wood
Or invest in a Morris fund.

"They wouldn't accept a word of criticism on jihad and dhimmitude," she says. "I had approached and explained the subject as a matter of human history, like any other such subject. My vision was pluralistic, and based on countless testimonies, including Muslim ones. It was clear that the students who objected would not accept nor even tolerate the perception of jihad's victims."

This is EXACTLY the fallacy behind all the political correctness. Even if you try to bend over backwards so as not to be called the intimidating names of racist, sexist, homophobic, one-sided, partisan, etc., etc., you will still be vilified by those who are trying to take over.

This is true of Islamic hegemonists as well as Democratic socialists.

In other words, even if you're a vegetarian, the tiger will pounce on you.

Yeah, I'm doin' Fantasy Football, but elections bring me back to The Republic. I got too busy this year to do that bit with the tamatas. Ran my high school reunion (in Nevada) over the July Fourth holiday. Suffered heavy losses in the market and now am contemplating retiring from retirement. Otherwise, wife and I are relatively healthy and looking forward to a Cal victory over Stanford this year, for the first time in seven or ten years. And you? Are you still connected with that spacey guy?

Spacey guy and I are still married. And happily, I might add. Don't tell that to the weirdos over at Losers Paradise/BikerBar, it will ruin their day. Yes, the Moose is loose over there.

Other than a few things that have come up in the past month, life has been grand. The flood was no pleasure, and the cleanup was, well, you know.

What are you trading?

Found out the planting season in AZ started last month. I've got some beautiful tamatas already on the vine!

On the contrary, I was in Montana getting ready to head back home. I have just now gotten back to the office.

A Sigh for my misanthropic muse....

Ahh the misanthrope's corner, the first thing I read when I open a National Review.
