Geology Picture of the Week, May 18-25, 2003 (and nobody answered last week's WhereIsIt!)
NASA Earth Observatory ^ | May 2003 | NASA

I vacillated a bit before posting this image. There's also a cool image of the eruption of Anatahan Island in the Pacific taken from the Space Station at the Earth Observatory link above. As for the picture below, click it to see the large version, which is gorgeous. You can even see some kind of phytoplankton bloom in the Salton Sea, and the Great Salt Lake has a variety of colors.

As for the WhereIsIt?, in the first reply below I've reposted the URL. Nobody figured this one out yet!

"Where is it?"

You mean the big red thing? Um, south of El Centro, maybe around a known geothermal area?

50 percent of American students cant find America on the map.

I'll give it a shot:

It's the western hemisphere of the Earth?

Yes, but you may be looking at the wrong image. Go to this URL: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/910003/posts

and scroll down to the bottom image (after the spring thaw images of the lake in Kazakhstan). Also scroll down in the replies for a different image of the WhereIsIt? region.

Prudhoe Bay?

Approximately the right latitude, but wrong side of the continent.

Mt Asgaard. Mt Asgaard is one of the most recognizable features in the Park. It is surrounded by glaciers, but can easily be reached with a bit of caution later in August when the snow has receded and exposed the crevasses, so that one can safely go around them.
