BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan has publicly accused British Prime Minister Tony Blair of direct responsibility in the death of screen-legend Katharine Hepburn. Blair, according to Gilligan, told a friend of his at a dinner party six months ago that he felt the film classic "The African Queen" was "somewhat overrated." This comment was repeated to several friends of Blair, one of whom repeated it to Gilligan, who then phoned Hepburn asking for a comment. "She was really shaken, I could tell," gloated Gilligan yesterday in Baghdad. "She was very proud of that movie and felt it represented her best work. So when I told her that the British Prime Minister had called it 'the vilest piece of cinema in the history of the universe' and had further called her performance 'the worst acting since Candace Bergen in The Man who would be King,' well, she was pretty devastated. And ultimately, I think that's what killed her."
When asked if perhaps Hepburn's death was related to the fact that she was 96 and had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for decades, Gilligan replied "no, no, it was Tony Blair who did her in. She may have been a tad frail, but it was Blair who pushed her over the edge. Yes sir, I'd say he's got blood on his hands. He has to resign, that's certainly clear to myself and everyone else at the BBC."
