Word For the Day, Thursday, August 14, 2003

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

scintilla \sin-TIL-uh\, noun
scintillant; adjective

1. A tiny or scarcely detectable amount; the slightest particle; a trace
2. A spark; a flash.
3. Miniscule

In victory, they must hold on to at least a scintilla of humility, lest they get too cocky -- and ripe for a takedown.
--Bill Breen, "'We are literally trying to stop time,'" Fast Company, May 2000

Etymology: Latin scintilla, "a spark, a glimmer, a faint trace." Also from scintilla is the verb scintillate, "to sparkle."

Good Morning Students. Welcome to class!

Class is now in session. The rules are simple; you get a grade if you use the WFTD in a sentence, haiku, limerick, or quatrain. You get a "+" if you make a link, or make the teacher laugh, or you offer the appropriate bribes. I hold the grade book; the whip and chair.

There are times when silence is more telling than any number of outbursts. The great amount of noise that Democrats are making about the alleged absence of Saddam's WMDs could just be one of those times.
The situation reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes story, Silver Blaze, I think, in which the dog didn't bark. From this obvious but overlooked fact the great detective deduced that the animal knew the intruders. In the present case, the dog that isn't barking is the White House.

I have no idea what the President has up his sleeve, but I'm willing to bet the demoncrats have no concept of what he really knows, and when he'll chose to share that information with the public. If the dems had a scintilla of intelligence, they would pipe down and watch things unfold. This President plays it close to the vest. With any luck, and a dash or two of vengeance, they could just get bit in the nates!

WMDs — has Bush outfoxed the Dems

A scintilla wit
The spark not to be seen here
Dems best be silent!

I have a scintilla coat. But when I'm around liberals, I'm always careful to wear it inside out.

I came in out of the rain. It's as dark as 8 pm right now here. National Weather Service says they've spotted water spouts off coast near me. Tornado action may be headed our way. I've only been in one twister before (in midwest) and I remember this dark eery look. I don't like the looks of this one bit.

Governor Perry is tired of the crap
And throws it back in the dumocrats' lap.
Come do the work for which you were hired
Or by Friday, your staffs will be fired.
