Is Madonna Over? MSNBC Ad Report Thinks So...
PABAAH: Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood ^

Madonna Falls Into the Gap
Her new ad's a dud
The much anticipated Madonna ad is a total dud. In it, she dances about on a city-street movie set, lip-syncing a song that mixes the beats of "Into the Groove" with lyrics from the more recent single "Hollywood." Then Missy Elliott pops up and does a short rap on the subject of Gap jeans, and the two improbably prance about like good, Gap-shopping friends. Madonna sings the closing line, "Get into the groove, got to show ya some moves, best to take it from me.
" Totally limp.
As a failure, the ad is interesting because Madonna has always been praised as much for her ability to market herself as for her actual talent as a singer and performer. Long before the "cool hunter" idea entered mainstream marketing discourse, she was renowned for spotting new trends and exploiting them for her own benefit. But in the wake of yet another box office tanking (what was that last movie called?) and disappointing album sales, she can't even get an actual commercial right. Maybe Madonna really is over...

This is excellent news! This anti-American celeb does not deserve a penny of our hard-earned money. She even thanked FRANCE for opposing the USA!!
Farewell Madonna! Stay in England!

The other problem for Madonna is, simply put, she is rapidly approaching 50 (she just turned 46). How many teenagers listen to singers who were popular 20 or more years ago?

Madonna has been over for a decade. Up til now her marketing machine was able to keep it cranking but now the party's really over.

What's interesting is that "GAP is back", they've had good profit increases and some real improvement in style in quality. That ad, to sell jeans, didn't work? Why, that means that it probably did more harm than good.
The thing is, Madonna with her outrageous costumes, isn't really a good choice to sell jeans. She's best at selling slut.

Madonna's problem is that she is committing the greatest sin possible in her world: getting old.
Her first hit record was recorded 24 years ago. Her first solo hit "Everybody" will be 21 years old in a couple of months. Her first Top 10 hit was almost 20 years ago.
Her latest record has been out for months and is not yet a gold record in the US.
She is done.

How many teenagers listen to singers who were popular 20 or more years ago?The ones who want to listen to quality, individual music from performers who didn't sell out for a contract before developing their skill.
But, your point is well taken. An almost-50 (the youngster) selling jeans? Why is a teenager going to buy clothes that someone much older than their mother wears?

At the time of the stylish "Material Girl" video, I thought she was really
hot. It's a funny counterpoint...when her image was sexy, I had no problem with her. A guilty pleasure. But when her
reality turned out to be a flat-out, nickal-a-go whore, it really ruined it for me. What's less attractive than a whore? An old one. (She doesn't even have the optional "retirement plan" of running the brothel.)
And writing children's books? I'd sooner eat my own spleen with a side of onions than let anything she has a hand in (sorry for that image) get anywhere near my children.

About ten years ago (back when Madonna was still popular--somewhere between the burning cross video and the cone bra, or was it the silver toothed dominatrix, but I digress) i pointed out to my then pre-teen daughter that I (her really uncool mother) was YEARS YOUNGER than Madonna. Yep, Madonna was 'old' to teens back then...but pointing that out to group of know-it-all middle schoolers was just too much fun.
Hope she invested well.

But when her reality turned out to be a flat-out, nickal-a-go whore, it really ruined it for me.Good point. The sassy noveau Monroe persona was fetching. The "I'm a filthy gutter slut and I love it" persona is not.
She does some contradictory things: with Evita and motherhood I thought she was going to market herself as more upscale so she could age gracefully.
Then she did the heroin chic, hair-dyed-an-improbable-black thing and the drinking-Kristal-in-chaps thing.
Now she's writing kids' books while replaying her leather dominatrix look and doing Gap commercials? Methinks The Change of Life is fast approaching.
