J. Warner mum on rule vote
by Peter Hardin
WASHINGTON -- It's not clear if he got it from former wife Elizabeth Taylor or if it is innate, but U.S. Sen. John W. Warner has a flair for the dramatic.
The fifth-term Virginia senator was one of only a handful of Republicans to remain undecided last week as their leaders weighed a possible Senate rule change to ban filibusters of judicial nominees.
Corin's Comment: Not printable on FR.

Kaine camp raises red flag on Kilgore ad spot
by Jeff Schapiro
Jerry W. Kilgore, the likely Republican nominee for governor, is stepping up his attack on Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine with a tongue-in-cheek radio commercial likening the Democrat to a motorist who signals right, "then suddenly turns hard to the left."
Corin's Comment: Schapiro
Kilgore ping.
George Allen ping.
Good grief................
Gopher State bump for George.
Sen Allen spoke at the Oklahoma GOP Convention on Saturday morning -- when he left after the speech, those Allen in 2008 signs outside the Convention were true -- he is definitely the frontrunner among Oklahoma activists. He was also at our banquet on Friday night when J.C. gave an awesome speech and moved closer to announcing for our OK Governor's race.
Senator is one of the most articulate, witty speakers I have ever heard and he had the whole convention eating out of his hand before he was through. He assured everyone there that the Republicans will use the Constitutional option on judges. From the newspaper article:
U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., who was keynote speaker, said an effort should start this month to eliminate filibusters in the Senate over President Bush's appointees to federal appeals courts.
``It's time for the Senate to do what they were elected to do and that is vote,'' Allen said. ``We're put in these positions to do something, not just warm a seat.''
For Lt Gov -- what do you think of the two remaining?
It's nice to see that Hanger took responsibility for his SNAFU, if after a little carping.
I haven't staked a claim in the LG race. I like both of them. I'm ~possibly~ leaning to Connaughton, but I need to see more.
I've signed on with Baril in the AG race. Nothing against McDonnell, but I've personally worked with Baril in the past.
Many of you have already signed up for tomorrow nights dinner. If you havent please do so quickly as we only have a few seats left. This year we also have a very special guest, Senator George Allen, who is increasingly mentioned as a potential 2008 Presidential candidate, as our keynote speaker.
The VIP reception begins at 6:30 pm. The dinner and program begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $45 each or $100 for the VIP reception with Senator Allen.

I like both Bolling and Connaughton, but I think that hands down Connaughton is the better candidate -- both in terms of politics and policy. They're both conservatives, but of course they're going to nitpick and twist each other's votes and positions in order to gain leverage and advantage.
Bolling has been going negative on Connaughton lately, criticizing him for things that he has done on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, mostly on tax issues. Of course, when Bolling was on the Hanover Board of County Supervisors, he did pretty much the same things that he is now criticizing Connaughton for doing.
Bottom line is that they're both staunchly pro-life, pro-(traditional) family and anti-tax, so we'll be fine with whoever wins the nomination. (Bolling supporters will dispute that Connaughton is anti-tax, but Connaughton is cutting the property tax rate by 16 cents this year from $1.07 to 91 cents per $100. He's also pushing to cap the tax liability on increased home assessments to 5.9% per year.)
I think that Connaughton can be a bigger help to the ticket, however, bringing someone on from Northern Virginia (even if he is south of the Occaquon River.) With Kilgore from Southwest VA and either McDonnell from VA Beach or Baril from Richmond, Bolling wouldn't add anything geographically whereas Connaughton could help form a connection with the Northern VA region for the whole ticket. Just my 2 cents
The fifth-term Virginia senator was one of only a handful of Republicans to remain undecided last week as their leaders weighed a possible Senate rule change to ban filibusters of judicial nominees.
I agree. We could use some geographic balance.
GOP has design on signs
At Shad Planking, candidates will pool support for Kilgore
by Tyler Whitley
"Signs, signs everywhere, and plenty of beer to drink!" That might be the motto of the Wakefield Shad Planking, the annual romp in the woods that is considered one of the festive highlights of the Virginia political season.
Corin's comment: I haven't been to the Shad Planking in 20 years. I don't think you can pee on the trees anymore though...
Kaine fires back at Kilgore, says rival 'too weak' to lead
Burst of negative ads shows gubernatorial race tight, analyst says
by Jeff Schapiro
Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine is defending his faith-based opposition to abortion and the death penalty in a new radio commercial that blasts his likely Republican foe for governor as "not being straight" with voters and "too weak to lead Virginia."
Corin's comments; We need those bumper stickers. How can we make it happen?

DeLay appears at fundraiser
He praises Frederick for his anti-tax vote in the Virginia House by Peter Hardin
WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, under a cloud of ethics questions, cleared time in his schedule to headline a fundraiser yesterday for Virginia Del. Jeffrey M. Frederick, R-Prince William.
hmmmm....
That is all...MUD
I saw a bumper sticker this morning that said:
"DEAN Screams for me."
Couldn't decide if it was a joke or if they were series. I think the latter which just makes me ROFLMAO thinking that's all they've got.
Business leaders who endorsed the tax package have been giving money to those lawmakers who backed it, said one longtime observer of state politics.
"Those who supported what they did said they would back them financially, and they have," said Robert Holsworth of Virginia Commonwealth University. Also, the GOP leadership "decided a united party in 2005 was better than a party divided by civil war."
Business supporting tax increases never cease to amaze, particularly in light of a later comment in the article:
The Virginia Conservative Action PAC has given between $10,000 and $20,000 in cash and in-kind gifts each to Chapman, Jarvis, Kenney and Oprison, as well as to two other Republican challengers.
"We felt that there was absolutely no justification in doing what they did in going against the majority in the House," Robin DeJarnette, the PAC's executive director, said of the mavericks. "There was no evidence that the tax increase was needed."
And the 2.5% cut in the grocer tax will be totally offset by the final installment of the cigarette tax increas that was FULLY supported by Philip Morris.
