Just hours after the polls closed with uncertainty about whether there would be a Democratic primary runoff in the race for mayor, NY1 has learned that second place finisher Anthony Weiner will concede to Fernando Ferrer.
Weiner is scheduled to make a formal announcement outside his childhood home in Brooklyn at noon Wednesday
When the polls closed last night, Ferrer appeared to fall just short of the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff, with absentee ballots yet to be counted.
Weiner made a campaign stop early Wednesday morning in Harlem and gave no indication that he could concede at that point.
"I think what's best for the party is we pursue this runoff, said Weiner. Let the counting go on. And I don't think anyone should be threatened by that. This is an opportunity for us to choose the direction of our party."
Election officials say that official results of the primary may not be known until next week. It's not clear that even after the concession, whether by law a runoff would still happen.
Ferrer will thus have the privilege to lose to Mayor Bloomberg in November. After his loss, I assume that he will continue to serve as Bronx borough president and hope that Congressman Serrano retires (which may take several decades).

Weiner is a lying sack, but he is still heads about Ferrer. Sadly, Bloomberg is the best NYC has to offer right now, and he's a joke.
File this under-who cares? They should call the general election here a SUPER Democratic run-off--or something like that. It would be more accurate.
I wanted the run-off, because it marginalizes the Dems even more as they have to pander for votes - kissing Sharpton's butt, etc.
