What’s former Governor Gehringer up to these days?
Last I read, he was director of policy and public sector strategies at the Environmental Systems Research Institute. I was a bit disappointed that he wasn’t able to hand off his office to a fellow Republican. I understand also he’s a bit of a semi-squish on a few issues (environmentalism & pro-ERA), and he’d turn 65 shortly after taking office (rather pushing it for someone embarking on a DC career).
I was thinking about Ray Hunkins, who many believed would’ve beaten Freudenthal in ‘02. He was the nominee last November, but lost horribly (in fact, it was such a dreadful loss that he had the distinction of scoring the single lowest percentage of the vote for a major party candidate since statehood — 30%). Hunkins would also turn 70 shortly after the start of the ‘09 Congress, another negative.
