Republican Erwin Roberts, a former personnel secretary in Gov. Ernie Fletcher's administration, said Tuesday he plans on seeking a Kentucky congressional seat held by first-term Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth.
Roberts, 35, whose resume includes stints as a federal and state prosecutor, notified the Federal Election Commission recently that he was forming a campaign committee. The move allows him to start raising money in what would be his first run for elective office.
To formally enter the 2008 race in the Louisville-area 3rd District, Roberts still must file candidacy papers with the secretary of state's office in Frankfort sometime after this year's November election.
"I believe my personal life experience and my professional experiences uniquely qualify me to address some of the challenges that we're facing," he said in an interview Tuesday.
Yarmuth, a former alternative newspaper publisher and columnist, was elected to Congress last November, unseating Republican incumbent Anne Northup in the Louisville-area district.
Preparing for his first run for re-election, Yarmuth raised nearly $304,000 in the first quarter this year and had nearly $293,000 on hand at the end of the period.
Roberts said his focus would be on public safety, health care, taxes and education.

I wish Roberts well. The current incumbent is a Moonbat.
If Ernie Fletcher loses by a landslide, it won’t be good for him.
Well, the election for Congress doesn’t coincide with the Gubernatorial election. I still think Northup should seek a rematch.
