Congressional candidates gear up for all-GOP race

Now that the crowd of candidates seeking Georgia's 10th congressional district has been cut down by eight, the two men who appear headed for a runoff are preparing for an all-GOP contest.

Front-runner Jim Whitehead's campaign said the emergence of fellow Republican Paul Broun as his opponent in the July 17 runoff won't throw a snag in the plans. Spokesman John Stone said the campaign will focus on maintaining the support that earned Whitehead more than 40 percent of the vote in Tuesday's special election.

"We know that regardless who we're running against, our campaign is going to be the same," said Stone. "We'll just reach out for all the same folks that voted for us the first time. And that's tough in a runoff."

Meanwhile, Broun said he will try to emphasize his role as an outsider.

"He's a business-as-usual, politics-as-usual type of politician," said Broun, an Athens physician. "I'm eager to go make some changes in Washington, make some changes in the budgetary process. I'm not a Republican robot, and I'm going to represent the people of this district."

While I have nothing against Jim Whitehead, I am convinced that Dr. Paul Broun is the best choice in the runoff. Conservatives and patriots need to send a message to the DC establishment, and Whitehead is the establishment candidate. Hopefully, Broun will emphasize border security and national sovereignty.

This race is more important than it appears to be.

That was my thinking, too. Another is age. While neither of the men are youngsters, Broun at 61 is 3 years younger than Whitehead. I don’t know how long Whitehead was intending on spending in Congress, but he’ll be in his late 70s before he accumulates the seniority of Charlie Norwood (who had a smidge over a modest 12 years at his death).

True, but the conservative grass roots both in Georgia and the U.S. wins the greater victory if Dr. Broun wins the runoff.
