Kennedy Will Not Challenge Landrieu (LA Senate race)
Political Wire ^ | August 10, 2007

Posted on 08/10/2007 5:16:15 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Karl Rove has been working to convince Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy (D) to switch parties for the 2008 election and run as the Republican challenger to incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) -- widely viewed as the weakest democratic senator up for reelection in 2008. However, according to an email from Kennedy to supporters, he will not be challenging Landrieu, instead choosing to run for reelection this year for State Treasurer.

Kennedy ran an unsuccessful campaign for senate in 2004, loosing to scandal-plagued David Vitter.

Update: A Political Wire reader emails: "In New Orleans, at least, Kennedy's decision not to challenge Charles Foti and run for election as Attorney General but to instead to run for re-election as State Treasurer is a sign that he is going to chalenge Landrieu. The speculation (by several commentators including former Louisiana Secretary of State James Brown) is that Kennedy will likely switch parties shortly before qualifying for re-election (which ends the first week of September) to prepare his way and beef up his bona fides to run as a Republican next year against Landrieu."

This does not look good. Especially since much of Mary Landrieu’s strongest constituancy moved away.

Political Wire is wrong.

All Kennedy has stated was that he challenge Foti this year and will again run as a treasurer.

He's undecided for next year.

I don’t want to jump the gun on this. The LA GOP already considers him a de facto Republican and there are no GOP challengers to Kennedy for his reelection (contrast that that EVERY statewide Dem has a substantial GOP challenger, and 2 GOP incumbents have NO announced Dem opposition, quite telling). If he makes his switch official, that’s when he’ll announce. He wants to secure his reelection as Treasurer first.

I don’t believe for a moment we’re going to go without a substantial challenger to Landrieu. I think we could even dig up Dave Treen and win.

Maybe Kennedy knows that because he’s been selected by Rove he’d be DOA anyway. Landrieu’s constituents have departed to raise the crime rates in Dallas and other cities that have given them refuge. However, all is not lost. Mayor “school bus” Nagin is presiding over one of the homicide capitals of the nation. Felons have always come through for the Democrats in Louisiana - even those no longer living. Kennedy is better off counting the money and peacefully depositing his pay check.

The GOP needs to pick up this seat and Johnson's seat just to remain even. Colorado and Minnesota are both vulnerable, perhaps Virginia, New Hampshire, and Oregon as well.

After 2006, Rove needs to stay out of this election cycle IMHO. He has done enough damage to last the GOP a lifetime starting when he decided that any candidate not supporting the President on immigration should not be supported starting in 2004 and stiff arming National Committee people to get Martinez in as head of RNC.

Rove or his people are the last people you want involved in your campaign right now.

PAR FOR the course. Republicans will continue to live down to the level of what’s expected of them. Why get excited about one race in one state where u have to fight tooth and nail while in another state the local Republicans are busy giving away seats without a fight or thru brain farts? Think macacca, culture of corruption, and the nominating of AlanKeys to take on Obama.

Kennedy is probably waiting to see how the GOP fares, esp Jindal, in November. If Jindal wins without a runoff and the GOP pick up a few statewide offices, then Kneedy may run for the Senate next year.

"Romney has spent a lot of money advertising in NH which is right next door to MA — Rudy has only been in the state a limited number of times and McCain hasn’t been there that much this time. Ads are all over for Romney and he has been advertising there since early in the year."

"The people from GW’s campaign have split between the three leading campaigns — the Bush people in Romney’s campaign are mostly from Jeb Bush not GW and some of them have left because of conflicts. He offered six figured salaries to lure them in which is why his burn rate is so high. It was money not loyalty in some cases."

"Most of the major donors like T. Boone Pickens, Tom Ricks, and Donald Trump have all gone to Rudy along with a lot more. No way Mehlman or Rove would join that campaign right now. A poll from NH when Romney is way down in the latest polls in CA, WI, NH, NJ, CT which were taken after the debat does not make a winner. GW lost NH in 2000 and went on to win. I have seen the numbers from the big states voting on 5 Feb and Romney is way back in those polls. Only poll he is leading by a lot is UT who votes that day."

"Rudy just added Anne Dinsmore as the Deputy Fundraiser who is one of the most organized and best fundraisers in the Country. Here is a list of her clients:"

(snipped)

"Rudy is adding more daily of people from the Bush 2000 campaign"
