Mitt Romney supporter Paul Weyrich, one of the founders of the Moral Majority, is pretty upset that Fred Thompson got the endorsement from the National Right to Life Committee. He's so mad he's made a spurious charge against the Thompson campaign and the NRLC which is bound to hurt Romney:
Fred Thompson's campaign lashed out at Mitt Romney Wednesday after one of Romney's key supporters suggested Thompson's recent endorsement by the anti-abortion National Right to Life Committee was traded for cash.
In an article in The Washington Times on Wednesday, Paul Weyrich the socially conservative co-founder of the Moral Majority who is backing Romney for president is quoted saying that Thompson's endorsement from NRLC "makes no sense" and speculated that it had been motivated by a pecuniary relationship.
"I think in all probability the Thompson people were engaged with the National Right to Life people in financial dealing," Weyrich told the newspaper.
Neither Thompson's camp nor the anti-abortion group itself took the charge sitting down.
"It is unseemly for the Romney campaign and its supporters to suggest that NLRC-PAC's coveted endorsement is based on a bribe. Second, this unfounded accusation is as outrageous as it is ironic, given the Romney campaign's long history of spreading money around to anyone who will take it," said Thompson spokesman Todd Harris
"The Romney campaign was clearly hoping for this endorsement and are now clearly upset. But being denied an endorsement is no excuse to impugn the integrity of the very organization they were just days ago trying to woo," Harris continued.
NRLC Executive Director David O'Steen told FOXNews.com that Weyrich's claim was "totally, totally false."
There's no financial arrangement with the Thompson campaign. We never asked the Thompson campaign for any financial consideration. They have not given us any financial consideration. Were not going to ask them for a contribution," he said. "There is absolutely no basis in fact for that."
That accusation against Thompson smacks of sour grapes, and blasting a major pro-life organization is not a winning move for Romney.
It was a cheap shot!
I’m not quite sure why there are Romney supporters. Duncan I can understand...Romney or Rudy...hmmm...just doesn’t make sense.
Probably Coordinator of Faith-based and Community Initiatives, I would imagine.
It was a very, very bad move on Weyrich's part. Perhaps not fatal, but I'd imagine Mitt is none too pleased with him.
Paul Weyrich has completely lost it. And Pat Robertson is backing Rudy. Beam me up, Scoty!!
Where will be the media outcry demanding an apology from Romney’s camp and WEYRICH himself? Don’t stay up too late watching CNN tonight as it’s not likely to happen...
don’t worry, I won’t : )
I think Robertson has been unhinged for some time now, but then again I've never had much truck with people attributing every natural disaster that occurs to the Almighty's anger at whatever degeneracy the attributer happens to be railing against at the moment.

Well said. Robertson thinks God gets mad at some group, then creates a natural disaster, and tells Roberson about it. I don’t buy it : )
I don't see how any Conservative could support Rudy McRomney -- liberal, megalomaniac, and phony conservative.
I'm supporting Fred but I could also support any of the other non-RudyMcRomney candidates.
Its loonsville man, dig it, these cats are certifiable!
Yup, Mitt's not happy with Weyrich. This sort of reminds me of the episode in one of the Star Wars Trilogy where one of Vader's generals screws up and says "I will apologize to Darth Vader. Then the next scene you see the general collapsing in death and Vader saying "apology accepted."
LOL!
I’m not too familiar with McCain’s past. I just can’t take his illegal immigration view, and he tends to come of as a reactionary.
It’s odd how weird our field is this year. Seems like there are far more unacceptables then there are acceptables.
So Mitt Romney is responsible for what one of his backers say?
If this is the best Fred can do, then do wonder Fred has imploded in the polls. Come on Fred, lift your game.
