McCrory looking to fare better in eastern N.C.

Another Republican candidate for governor is working again on getting some support down east.

Charlotte Mayor and GOP gubernatorial hopeful Pat McCrory announced this week he was hiring former Carteret County party chairman Bob Pruett to lead his grassroots efforts in 39 eastern counties.

Eastern North Carolina voters remain predominantly Democratic, but more have voted Republican in federal races in recent years. But the GOP has had a hard time translating that to governor.

In 2004, Republican nominee Patrick Ballantine of Wilmington didn't fare that well as incumbent Democrat Mike Easley – from Southport – racked up big wins there.

This time, Democratic nominee Beverly Perdue is from New Bern. And McCrory only won one eastern county in the May 6 primary, losing the rest to second-place Fred Smith.

Democrats have held the NC Governorship for 16 years, so the calls for change could wind up benefitting Pat McCrory.

“Democrats have held the NC Governorship for 16 years”

Dang! Time to make a comeback.

Lord knows we could use a change in NC. The Gov't here is more corrupt than most Northeastern states that I've lived in.

That's one good thing that came out of the Duke Lacrosse mess...Roy Cooper (the AG, and a real straightarrow) has been shining a flashlight into some inconvenient dark corners since he tossed Nifong to the wolves. Lots of cockroaches scuttling around frantically...fun to watch it play out in the local media.

I think McCrory has a good chance, if for no other reason than the current power structure is about to get tossed out on its ear and Purdue (the current Lt Gov) is going out with it.

Time for a comeback but too many Obamamaniacs will be carted to the polls in droves! McCrory won the debate tonight hands down. It was like adult versus high school in my opinion. Unfortunately, too few probably viewed and far too many will vote on sound byte commercials, party lines, gender lines or name recognition. Richard Moore was the better democrat candidate in the primary.
