Brooklyn Conservatives have wasted no time, picking retired banker and former Marine Corps captain Paul Atanasio, 59, as their candidate for Congress.
"He is my congressional candidate," said Brooklyn Conservative chairman Jerry Kassar. "I'm going forward with that."
Atanasio, an attorney, will replace the late Frank Powers as the Brooklyn Conservative pick in the race.
A formal party candidate has yet to be chosen because Brooklyn Conservatives and those on Staten Island disagree over the choice.
Brooklyn wanted Powers, who was the GOP designee, while Island Conservatives prefer City Councilman Michael McMahon (D-North Shore).
If the two sides can't come to an agreement, the state Conservative executive committee will decide the matter sometime next month.
State Conservative chairman Michael Long has said that he opposes giving McMahon the party endorsement.
Atanasio, who also interviewed with the Island GOP in the race, was managing director of public finance for UBS-Paine Webber, and also worked for Bear Stearns and Chemical Securities.
"He's very articulate on the issues," said Kassar. "Everything from alternative energy to taxes to pro-life to opposition to gay marriage."

What’s going on up there, anyway? This race is turning out to be a strange one, and not in a good way.
thanks, bfl
Holy cow, there are Conservatives in Brooklyn?
I wonder if I know any of them.
I knew a handful when I lived in Bay Ridge. They even had a clubhouse in Dyker Heights for awhile. Mike Long has his liquor store on 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, in a part of the nabe that is now known as Little Arabia.
Brooklyn conservatives tap ex-Marine Corps captain to replace Powers (NY Congressional race)
Pssst.......no such thing as an EX-Marine,
Once a Marine always a Marine........with the possible exception of John Murtha
If anyone in the “Conservative” party wants to nominate the rat they can take a bath in the east river. Are they retarded? They know Pelosi is a hardline leftist, right?
I don’t know what’s going on. I think that the Democrat nominee is pro-life, which is one reason.
Little Arabia? Jeeeeeeez
I know they support some alleged so-con rats upstate but I thought that was because said rats control the local party organization. I wouldn’t expect this in Staten Island.
OK, let’s take this a step at a time.
This article is about the New York Conservative Party nomination for the congressional district. The Brooklynchapter of the Conservative Party wants Atanasio to be nominated despite (i) Brooklyn comprising only about 1/3 of the district’s population and (ii) the GOP nominee not having been decided yet? And the Staten Island chapter of the Conservative Party is countering not with a conservative Republican who could get the nomination for both the GOP and the Conservative Party (such as state Supreme Court Justice Joseph Maltese) but with a Democrat assembleyman?
Frankly, the Staten Island Conservatives are making the parochial Brooklyn Conserrvatives look like geniuses.
Perhaps DJ’s ideas of getting Guy Molinari to reclaim his old House seat (for no more than 3 terms) is our only way out of this mess. It’s amazing that it could come to this in a NYC district that gave President Bush 55% in 2004.
