Democrats are realizing that winning the Hispanic vote is more critical than ever if they hope to carry Nevada in November.
And so as Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin rallied supporters in Carson City on Saturday, Democrats were redoubling their outreach efforts to Latinos. To point: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson gathered with local Hispanic leaders for a discussion on the economy at the College of Southern Nevada before setting off to canvass, attend a Telemundo soccer tournament and deliver remarks at the Clark County Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson dinner.
The visit was one in a series of recent actions by the campaign underscoring the importance of the Hispanic vote here and throughout the Intermountain West.
“John Kerry lost Ohio,” Richardson said in an interview. “If he had won Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado, he would be president today. I think the key to the election are these three Western states — and the margin of victory is in the Hispanic vote.”
they come from a pretty much marxist society down there in Mexico and parts of South America. They DO NOT know the freedoms or our history nor do they care to. Most of them come here for jobs and free medical care as well as many other benefits we offer to them.
They know little of the freedom we have, they just know they can make money here. Therefore it makes them ignorant.
They are NOT stupid they are misinformed.
The GOP has plenty to gain by being hispanic-friendly. Hispanic votes are competitive unlike the black vote and their immigration patterns are similar to those of the Irish or Italian-Americans of years past.
Hispanics in Texas and Florida are quite competitive. They are as a block very socially conservative and those who escape socialist regimes are quite friendly to the Republican party. We have to separate the hispanic vote from the illegal vote which is fairly large.
That being said, Richardson is a pathetic loser who had no reason being in the primaries or thinking his endorsement meant anything.
Same here in our office in NM. One listens to Rush and Sean, and another is vocal in her hatred of him.
Obama didn’t want to anger the Clinton’s for one reason.
I believe some of them overestimate their importance.
Our country will not completely fall apart if all the illegals go away.
Our elections do not hinge completely on their votes.

As far as not knowing what freedom is, many people who come from oppressive countries know more about freedom than native Americans. They have a full perspective that most Americans don’t have.

Mexican American is not the same as Mexicans and as much as Gov. Richardson would LIKE to think the world and his state vote is important...it’s not..I doubt they will fall too quickly in line with Obama. A lot are hard working good people that have a lot of family in the military due to the benefits.
I've heard through the grapevine that quite a number of prominent Hispanic Democrats in Corpus Christi will not be voting for Obama.
One of Obama's Harvard Law School buddies, Juan Garcia, is running for reelection for a second term representing district 32 (a mostly Republican district that is partially in Corpus Christi) in the Texas legislature. Both Hugo Berlanga (a former state representative) and Tony Bonilla (family of trial lawyers) are endorsing Todd Hunter a former Democrat legislator who is running as a Republican. Hunter was actually born into a Republican family in Oklahmoa, but he ran as a Democrat back in the eighties when the Democrats controlled the legislature. Juan who used to be called "John" before becoming a politician is notorious for "gost voting" for other legislators and having other legislators "ghost vote" for him while he was absent from the legislature rasing money and campaigning for Obama. He's also known for being late or even a no show to events he has committed to attending. He even caused hundreds of Boy Scouts to stand for 30 minutes at mid day in the south Texas summer sun at an event where he was supposed to speak but never showed up.
Hispanics are practically roped and branded by the Dem party at the border (hint - maybe the GOP should do more itself???) - but they are still not 100% in the Obama camp.
Blacks do not like Hispanics, who generally do better than blacks do even though they, Hispanics, are at a disadvantage because they are immigrants and because of the language issue. Hispanics don’t like being lumped in with blacks, and a lot of low-income areas are marked by conflicts between blacks and Hispanics. I don’t think Obama is flying very high with Hispanics, from what I’ve read.
No candidate can win any office without crossover votes from other tribes.
I enjoy the most fun of all, because I am technically Latino, usually mistaken for "Caucasian", but claim African-American on every form, questionnaire or poll which requires an answer.
I am waiting for the tribal politics to catch up to me and allow me to vote three times.
When have a majority of non-Cuban Hispanics ever voted Republican? I don't see this happening often at all.
Note that the exit poll that claimed that Bush won 44% of Hispanics was the same poll that forecasted a Kerry victory. Oops. Revised numbers put his share somewhere in the high 30s. Bush never had a chance of closing a 20+ point gap to win this group.
Republicans would be far better off appealing to their core constituency - white males. Obviously there is overlap but they gain nothing if they trade plentiful white male votes for scarce Hispanic votes.

Illegal Hispanics are invading cities large and small across the U.S., forming geographically large ethnic enclaves, committing absurd numbers of crimes, spreading gang warfare and blight, demanding (and getting) special privileges from the government, and milking public services for all that they're worth. And one could reasonably expect that they will continue to "stick with their own kind" more than white European immigrants, because that's exactly how racial minority groups usually behave.

Certainly. The trick is to attract Hispanic voters without becoming pandering race-obsessed dolts like the lib Democrats.
It is hard to do, and the lines are not always clear.
It would probably help for McCain, or Sarah to perhaps do multiple campaign appearances with Linda Chavez, or with other hispanic/Spanish Republicans. (I'm not a big fan of Chavez, but she could help alleviate any mistrust among the moderate GOP leaning Hispanics.
Like I said, it is not easy to go after one particular voting block without being seen as a panderer.
