Sen. Tim Huelskamp, the veteran Fowler Republican, has announced he'll pursue a seat in the U.S. Congress for 2010.
Huelskamp wants to fill the First Congressional District opening left by western Kansas' Rep. Jerry Moran.
Moran already has announced his intention to run for the seat being vacated by Sam Brownback in the US Senate.
Huelskamp made his decision after meetings in Washington, D.C., left him somber and fearful of the direction the government is taking under the new leadership of President-elect Barack Obama and other Democrats.
Leaders in Washington in both political parties have lost touch with the fundamental principles that most Americans live our lives by every day - common sense, fiscal responsibility, and the traditional moral values and respect for individual freedoms that built this country, Huelskamp said in a statement.
I am absolutely convinced that now is the time for a new class of principled leaders in Washington who will stand up for these and other core American values. We need folks who are willing to stand boldly for truth and the principles upon which our nation was built.
Huelskamp has served in the Kansas Senate since 1996.

The race to succeed Senate candidate Jerry Moran is on.
This district calls for a nosebleed Conservative.
I believe that’s what Tim Huelskamp is (from my limited knowledge). It’s never too early to start working on 2010.
Not to be skeptical, but these guys have heard our outcries
and will say anything it takes to get to Washington. We need
to hold these guys to a tight leash, and make sure they are
what they want us to believe they are.
Mel Martinez has announced his decision to retire his senate
seat, and the State of Florida CFO (D)Alex Cink (female) has
announced she would want the vacant seat. (I only mention this
because I just heard the news this week.)
I'm sick and tired of guys/gals politicking by saying what we
want to hear only to change their stripes once in DC. We need
to make sure we get what we vote for.
Huelskamp may be the first to announce. He won’t be the last.
“This district calls for a nosebleed Conservative.”
Very true, albeit one with a strong knowlege of agriculture. It’s one of the biggest wheat-growing districts in the nation. I don’t know anything about this candidate. Sam Brownback’s Chief of Staff is also running.
In the case of certain candidates already holding office, it is merely a matter of checking to see if rhetoric matches the record. This is why Slick Willard was so easy to vet when he ran for President, since his lies didn’t match a word of what he did as MA Governor and his ultraleft record. If Huelskamp is a phony, he’ll be smoked out.
Well Huelskamp (unique name) is talking the talk. Somber and fearful about sums it up.
No doubt he talks a good game but he really doesn't have a track record to go against. We'll see who else throws their hat in the ring. Kansas 1st takes up the whole western part of the state. There are going to be a lot of potential candidates.
